This is my first time customizing Breyer's G1 Stablemate Draft Horse, but it won't be the last! This delightfully chunky mold lends itself to a wide variety of heavy draft breeds, and I decided I wanted to depict the Ardennes horse, one of Europe's oldest breeds. So he's been made over into a bay roan with haired mane, tail and feathering, the most complex hairing job I've done yet.

The Ardennes Draft Horse or Ardennais is considered one of the oldest breeds of draft horse.
Their history reaches back to Ancient Rome. The Ardennes breed could be a direct descendant of the prehistoric Solutré horse.
It is claimed to be descended from the type of horse described by Julius Caesar in his Commentarii de Bello Gallico.
Caesar described these horses of Belgium as "rustic, hard and tireless." He recommended them for use in heavy cavalry units.
The early type was used by many later Roman emperors for military applications.
The breed's ancestors are thought to have been bred for 2,000 years on the Ardennes plains. It is one of the oldest documented European heavy draft breeds.
They weigh 700 to 1,000 kilograms (1,500 to 2,200 lbs).

I've been over the hills and far away yesterday, roaming about the countryside from a prime vantage point as heavy as a good-sized small car, as comfy as a sofa and as fast as, well, an alarmingly large snail.
Announcing The Newest Furbaby On Our Farm, "Clover Oaks Alexandra of Bellau Wood" by Elizabeth Sescilla Via Flickr: Ok, so her name is a bit of a mouthful, so you can just call her Ally :) For those of you who have not yet "met" Ally in my earlier photos when we were anticipating her arrival, she is a 6&1/2 month old Belgian Ardennes. Here's a photo of her with her dam when she was very young: www.flickr.com/photos/dogislove/2614751680/ In Belgium, this breed is very common, but in the US, there are only 8 horses of this breed, and Ally is the first Ardennes foal ever born on US soil! Her color is Bay Roan. It's hard to tell in these photos b/c she is wet from the rain in the past 2 days, and the mud that she has learned she loves to roll in *grin*, but her head and legs are bay, her body is bay with lots of roaning (white hairs mixed throughout to give it a lighter color), and her feather is black. We are so excited and we just feel so fortunate to have been able to purchase such a special, beautiful filly. She is such a tank, and especially so for her age!
