the first thing she notices is a tiny streak of glitter sitting on laniâs face,  catching every flash of colored light:  not the stage,  not the lights,  not even the bass vibrating through the crowd as another set wraps up and people around them are starting to gather for the weeknd.  her stomach tightens because she missed her so much,  it almost knocks the air out of her lungs which is honestly ridiculous,  because they were only avoiding each other for whole two days and a half.  or,  niya was.  and even though with everyone else she would act like everythingâs perfect,  every single time she would spot her group of friends in the distance,  sheâd turn around and suddenly found a redbull stand more interesting place to hang out in.  it was nothing to do with lani or nova,  it was everything to do with her and teddy,  because if teddy was standing there,  what if someone looked between them for too long ?  what if lani did ?  what if lani saw what they didnât even talk about after ?  people always joke that best friends share one brain cell,  lani practically lives inside niya and knows about every version of teddy:  twelve year old crush before niya even knew what a crush was,  seventeen year old disaster that she promised they would laugh about when they are old and wrinkly,  every single time niya swore she was finally over him and every single time lani gave her that look because she clearly wasnât when she was staring at teddy across bonfires,  birthday parties and new yearâs countdowns.  she stood in every chapter of niyaâs life that mattered and was supposed to be the first person niya told everything,  always,  but instead she spent three days hiding from her,  three days pretending she couldnât see her texts scared that all it would take is one look from her best friend and she would spill everything.  â well,  this is awkward, â  is all she manages to let out after letting the silence sit.  then,  she lets out a quiet laugh.  â i promise iâm not avoiding you babe, â  the sentence comes out too quickly,  too defensive and it makes her want to kick herself right on the spot.  nice niya,  very subtle.  â i think the festival got weirdly overwhelming, â  her weight is shifting from one foot to the other,  the alcohol left a pleasant warmth in her chest,  weed made everything around her feel just a little softer and if it wasnât for all of that,  sheâd probably burst into tears.  â i love you.  can we please pretend i havenât been an absolute menace to the society for the last three days and you will let me reclaim my position as your festival wife before our shared boyfriend gets on stage ? â  her pinky hooks around laniâs without thinking and for this second,  she chooses to ignore the knot sitting beneath her ribs.  â come on,  or else we will end up behind annoyingly tall men, â  if guilt had a shape,  itâd look like standing in front of your best friend,  pretending your life didnât split into a before and after that she knows nothing about and niya would give anything to go back to the version of herself that believed she would be able to tell lani everything.
