Sure, I admit Appmon is far from being the best anime season, but it was still a much needed breath of fresh air right in the middle of the Adventure Tri era. The movies just didn't age well and the gaps between them were so boring, the brand would've become just plain unbearable without that show and for that alone I'm forever grateful.
A deviantART user by the name of digimontamer93 found old Appmon art of mine and asked me for a commission out of the blue! They wanted me to design an AppGattai of five of their Standard-grade fan Appmon themed, around food service and delivery. Here's the final design alongside a custom app icon I made in Illustrator. It was a complicated commission but really fun to work on!
There's something about Appmon that I've wondered about since my first rewatch of it, and I started thinking about it again last night after rewatching some early series episodes.
In episode 10, after Rei properly introduces himself to the trio, Haru refers to him as "Rei." He continues to do this until about midway through episode 12 when he switches to calling him "Rei-kun."
This sticks out as odd to me. Haru, being the polite person he is, refers to most human characters with honorifics. From my understanding, honorifics are typically not dropped or forgone unless the people in question are really close. Now, anime tends to work on different logic to real life as many characters in Appmon don't use honorifics with each other even upon first meeting, however Haru tends to consistently use them. ("Eri-san," "Astra-kun," "Ai-chan," etc.)
A notable exception is Yuujin. Haru initially did use an honorific prior to befriending him ("Oozora-kun"), but dropped it upon Yuujin's request once they established they were friends.
It's strange to me that the exact opposite happened with Rei. When they first met, Haru only ever called him just "Rei." It wasn't until he decided to save him that Haru switched to "Rei-kun," which he consistently used for the rest of the series.
So my question is, why? Why didn't Haru start off referring to Rei as "Rei-kun"? Is there something I'm missing regarding honorifics and/or how they're handled in anime? Was it a scripting mistake? I was curious if anyone here that's more knowledgeable than me on this topic had an answer.
YuuHaru/Harujin still reign supreme in their Gay Throne.
Appmon's writers could be worse in some other aspects, but their bravery is unmatched in the entire Digimon anime franchise.
Only they dared to make the protagonist bi and in love with another man who also requites said feelings for him (literally born for the protagonist 😭) and their relation is a key part of the main theme of the series
