124) A Quiet Place was directed by John Krasinski and stars himself and Emily Blunt as a couple in a post apocalyptic world where they are forced to live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound. This is a low budget survival horror that received critical acclaim and grossed more than two million dollars at the box office, so I was really looking forward to it and obviously I really enjoyed it, even though I can pinpoint some issues. Firstly the incipit is probably the key to the success because it’s a smart and original idea: horror movies are based on the use of silence and scores, so basically creating an atmosphere in which you cannot make noises will increase the tension at high levels. And so the script is essential because there are few dialogues, they usually whisper or communicate through signs and so the ability of Krasinski behind the camera is remarkable since he has to present the characters basically with gestures. The performances are impeccable and also the kids are quite good. As I said I have some issues, some scenes in particular lose credibility since it’s humanly impossible not to scream in those cases. Moreover some decisions taken by the kids are quite stupid and for me the monsters showed up too early. Lastly the final scene isn’t satisfying, I wanted a clearer ending but I assume that they’ll eventually make a sequel. Anyway A Quiet Place is very good thrilling, atmospheric survival if you want to see something different from the usual films. HORROR/THRILLER •7,5• P.S. The concept reminded me of The Last of Us. #aquietplace #movieoftheweek #horror #survival #thriller #johnkrasinski #emilyblunt #monsters #apocalypticworld #thelastofus #tension
