A cold evening, colder than ever. On a street made out of harsh stones, the wind blew as Izabela held onto her coat. Gilbert gently offered her his, trying to keep her warm. Izabela nodded her head, while trying to keep it hidden inside his coat. Gilbert grabbed her chin, making her look up as he wiped away a tear from her cheek.Â
'Dove.' Gilbert mumbled, looking down at Izabela.Â
'I know I'm supposed to be celebrating⌠And I am happy how everything is turning out for me, but...' Izabela muttered. 'What will happen to you?' Her lashes fluttered, wiping some tears off them.Â
'Nothing, my darling.' Gilbert tried to cheer her up.Â
'I was already so worried in 1947!' Izabela choked out. 'And I'm even more scared right now!'Â
Gilbert tried to shush her, but Izabela wouldn't let herself be caught in his embrace. She grabbed the flaps of his coat, pulling on them as she cried. She finally let herself fall onto his chest, quietly sobbing. Gilbert ran his fingers through her hair, gently whispering to her. 'It's okay, darling, it will all be okay.'Â
'But what ifâŚ' Izabela sobbed out. She then let herself cry harder as she thought of the consequences of the fall of the Berlin Wall. She knew it would be better, but she was also aware it could mean she would lose Gilbert. 'What if I lose youâŚ'Â
'My darling, don't even say that.' Gilbert whispered to her, giving her a light kiss on the forehead. 'I promise you⌠Nothing bad will happen to me.'Â
'But you said you have to go away for some timeâŚ' Izabela questioned with a pout.Â
'I promise I will see you againâŚ' Gilbert tried to reassure her.Â
'But when?' Izabela asked immediately, holding her head up.Â
'Soon enough, my darling, it will be quick. October 12th, I promise I will be back for you.'Â
Izabela let her hand ghost against Gilbert's cheek. 'Oh, but it's so longâŚ'Â
'My darling, every moment without you feels like an eternity, but it just makes all the time we've been together better.' Gilbert whispered, leaning down. 'Doesn't it?'Â
Izabela laughed quietly. 'You're a real charmer, Mr. Beilschmidt.'Â
'Only for you.' Gilbert said, putting his hand over her waist. Izabela batted her lashes as she leaned closer towards him. Gilbert quickly enough caught what she meant, leaning back and slowly giving him a tender kiss. Izabela let herself drown in it, putting her arms around his neck.Â
They very tenderly pulled away from each other, looking into each other's eyes. Izabela slowly blinked as she gazed up at Gilbert. Gilbert held her face up by placing his hand again on her cheek. 'Remember darling â I love you always, dove.'Â
Izabela lightly cuddled her face into his hand. 'I love youâŚ'
'I love you too, my darling.' Gilbert whispered before kissing her for the last time they would ever be together. He pulled away with a heavy heart, walking away. Izabela raised her hand, waving faintly, as Gilbert slowly disappeared into the night.Â
