Holding Out For A Hero
So... This little story was in my head as soon as that sleazy doctor âstalkedâ Brett... Letâs get Brettonio back together!!! Please let me know what you think! I knew he had to be married... it sucks that Brett had to get hurt, but maybe now sheâll see that Antonio is truly the only man for her.
Also, thank you to all the amazing people who make these incredible gifs and pics that I can use for my stories... I love it... I wish I had your gift.
Sylvie was busy doing inventory, while still fuming with Stella, when her cell began to vibrate. She put the gauze back in the cabinet and checked it.  âWho the heck?â She didnât know anyone at Lakeshore as much as she knew the nurses and doctors at Med. She answered the call.  âHello?â
âIs this Paramedic Sylvie Brett?â A familiar voice asked.
âYeah... who is this?â Â
âUh, we met earlier... Pete Calhoun...â
âOkaaaaay.â
âIn the produce department... the eclamptic patient.â
âOh, right!â Brett finally put 2 and 2 together.  âThe doctor.â
âYeah.â
âHi.â
âHi.â He chuckled. Â
âHow did... you get my number?â Sylvie stumbled over her words.
âI... may have called the CFD to find out who you were... and ... I may... have asked for your number.â
âOoookay.â Sylvie had no idea where this was headed.  âWhat can I do for you Dr. Calhoun?â
âPete... please.â He replied.  âI was... wondering if youâd like to go out for dinner tonight?â He quickly added.  âIf... Iâm not being too forward.â
Sylvie had been single for some time, and it was getting obvious that Antonio wasnât ever going to do that check-in theyâd discussed.  âUm, sure... Iâm off in a few hours. Where would you like to meet?â
He rattled off the name of a new lounge that had opened up. Â
âSure, um, Iâll be there say around 7?â
âThat sounds good. Iâll see you then, Sylvie Brett.â
âItâs a date... Dr. Pete Calhoun.â She ended the call. She was feeling giddy. It had been the first real date sheâd had since Antonio and her had taken a break. Maybe it was time for her to actually move on. She was sure Antonio had probably moved on. Â
She finished tidying up the ambo while making a list of what they were running low on. She checked the time. She wasnât going to have time to deal with Stellaâs over exaggeration of Hope supposedly being a thief. Sheâd have to high-tail home, shower, and get ready if she wanted to make it to her date. She quickly finished up her tasks and gathered her things. She also didnât want Gaby to find out. She knew that Gaby had a thing against medics dating doctors. Â
Sylvie slipped into a dress sheâd bought in hopes of wearing it for Antonio, but she was at the point of not being able to live in some fantasy that heâd ever come back. Sheâd asked Gaby earlier in the week on how Antonio had been doing and was shocked to learn he was back in Intelligence and that Eva had moved in with him. She was also surprised to learn that heâd changed apartments too. For her, these were all signs that he had moved on and it was time for her to move on too. She sighed. Â
While she was thrilled that someone was interested and he was a doctor, and really cute, she was still weary about the way heâd gotten her number. She shook off the feeling and headed out to catch a cab to her date.
The cab arrived in short time, so Sylvie paid him and stood outside the lounge. She was suddenly overwhelmed with feelings. She was excited but at the same time she was anxious and was feeling guilty. She looked around. She still had time to leave. She had time to go home and think about how she was being foolish. She stopped herself. Â
âIâve waited long enough. I deserve to be happy.â She whispered to herself. She took a deep breath and headed inside. She checked her coat and headed to find Pete.
She saw him at one of the tables towards the back of the lounge. She made her way through all the people and waved.  âHi. Sorry, Iâm late.â
He got up.  âIâm just glad you showed up.â
Sylvie wasnât sure how to take that.  âUm... okay.â
âI was worried that the stalker-ish way I tracked your number at the CFD may have sent you running.â
âOh, it still might.â She sat in the booth.  âI just figured Iâd get a nice meal outta you first.â
âAh, smart woman.â He slid into the booth, across from her.  âYou were really impressive treating that victim on the scene.â
âAw... thanks.â Sylvie smiled. While she knew she was good at her job, she always liked hearing others acknowledge it. Â
She went to ask him what kind of doctor he was while he started asking how long sheâd been a paramedic. They laughed. Sylvie was still a little nervous.
âHow about I order us some wine?â He asked.
âSmart man.â She smiled.
They made small talk. She quickly learned that he was an ER doc over at Lakeshore. He would ask how long sheâd been a medic with the CFD. They ate, drank and laughed. By the time the bill came, Sylvie was feeling quite at ease with him. He asked her if she needed a ride home.
âI could always take a cab.â She didnât want to push her luck.
âAt this hour... Iâll give you a ride. Itâs no problem.â He smiled.  âReally.â
âOkay... I just need to collect my coat.â
âSure thing.â He helped her from the booth and they headed to the coat check.
It didnât take long for them to get back to Sylvieâs apartment. He walked her to the front of the building. Sylvie didnât know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised when Pete kissed her. She didnât really stop him, but she wasnât exactly sure what was going on. She pulled back a little.  âIâm not really a âkissing-on-the-first-dateâ kinda girl.â
Pete back up a bit.  âOh. Okay.â He smiled at her.  âI respect that.â
Sylvie thought she was pushing him away. She didnât want him to leave just yet, so she told him that the way he smiled at her on the call was sort of like a first date.
âOh, I respect that even more.â He kissed her again. Â
âYouâre very respectful.â
He replied slyly.  âWhich is a good reason for you to invite me up to your apartment.â
Sylvie wasnât sure if it was nerves or the wine, or both, but she giggled.  âI have two roommates that are man-children.â
He kissed her again, whispering.  âI can handle that.â
Sylvie was about to say something else but didnât get the chance when his cell began to ring. He excused himself to take the call. Â
He came back.  âIâm so sorry. Itâs a patient emergency.â He kissed her again.  âI have to go deal with this... but I had a really good time tonight.â
Sylvie nodded.  âSo did I.â
âCan we do this again? Like, sometime in the very near future?â
Sylvieâs cheeks filled with colour.  âSure, Iâd like that.â
Pete kissed her one last time.  âBye.â
âBye.â She whispered as he ran to his Audi. She stood there as he pulled away from the curb and headed towards Lakeshore. She gently touched her lips. Part of her felt like she was betraying Antonio and the other was wondering what happened to her to make out with a guy on their first date. She eventually went in the apartment to think about the nightâs events.
It was a couple days later when Gaby and Sylvie got a call out that ended up with them heading to Lakeshore instead of Med. Sylvie was giddy. It was the perfect time to see if Pete was in and have a surprise visit. She also figured it would be easier to talk to Gaby about it if they were there. Â
âSo, I kinda went on a date with that doctor.â Sylvie whispered as they headed to restock.
âDr. âYouâre just paramedics, you have to listen to meâ? That doctor?â
Sylvie shook her head.  âHeâs not that bad.â
âReally?â Gaby arched an eyebrow.  âSo, why are we resupplying here, again?â
âUh, Medâs supply of gauze was really low last time we were there.â
Gaby looked at her.  âHuh.â
âIâm serious.â Sylvie filled the container with a variety of gauzes that they were running low on.
âI didnât notice that... and we were only there a few hours ago.â
Sylvie groaned.  âCome on, we better head back to the house before Casey sends squad out after us.â
âReally?â
âGaby... heâs acting weird... you said so yourself... like 15 minutes ago.â
âItâs this thing with Severide.â Gaby countered.  âAnd now itâs spreading everywhere.â
They were walking from the supply room past the main desk in the ED when Sylvie stopped to ask the nurse a question.  âUm, hi. I was wondering if Dr. Pete Calhoun is working today?â
Gabyâs jaw dropped. The nurse nodded and paged him. Gaby turned to face Sylvie.  âWhy didnât you tell me you wanted to swing by to see Dr. Hottie?â
âUm... I wasnât sure how youâd feel about it.â Sylvie stammered.  âAnd there really wasnât that much gauze at Med.â
Gaby nodded.  âMhmm. Uh, Brett.â She pointed over Sylvieâs shoulder.
Sylvie spun around and saw Pete come around the corner. She had to admit, he looked really good in scrubs.  âHi.â She waved.
âUh, Sylvie... wh... what are you doing here?â He was frozen in place.
âOh, we were just picking up supplies, so I figured Iâd say hi.â
Pete was about to speak up but was interrupted by the nurse at the desk.  âUh, Dr. Calhoun... your wife is on the phone... she canât get a parking stall, so sheâs waiting out front for you.â
Sylvie looked between the nurse and Pete.  âYour... your WIFE?!â
Pete took a few steps towards Sylvie.  âIâll call you later and explain.â He was trying to prevent a scene.  âOkay?â
Gaby grabbed Sylvie who was glaring at the slime ball. Sylvie was furious. She glared at Pete.  âNo. Not okay.â
âSylvie, please.â Pete was coming towards them.
âWhat is wrong with you?!â Sylvie raised voice was causing unwanted attention. Â
Gaby grabbed her again, spun her around and pushed her out of the ED.  âHey, come on... letâs get the hell outta here.â She looked over her shoulder and shot Pete Calhoun a death glare. Â
Once they were back at the ambulance bay, Sylvie let it all out.  âHow could I be so wrong about that guy?!â
âIâm sorry, Sylvie.â Gaby patted her shoulder. She wasnât sure of what else she could do.  âHeâs a fool.â
âIt never even occured to me that he might be married.â Sylvie pounded on the gurney.  âIâm a fool.â
Gaby turned Sylvie to face her.  âNO. You arenât the fool. He is.â She sighed.  âYou just tend to see the best in people and maybe... sometimes you ignore the rest. Itâs something all your friends know and love about you.â Â
Sylvieâs demeanour changed.  âHmm.â
âWhat?â
âUh, nothing.â Sylvie shut the back doors of 61 and went around to her side.  âLetâs just go. Please.â
Gaby got in behind the wheel and pulled out of the bay. She headed back to the house. She knew something was bothering Sylvie, but she wasnât going to force the subject. There was already too much tension in that house as it was. She only hoped that whatever was going on between Brett and Kidd would be resolved soon and that whatever was going on between Casey and Severide would be resolved peacefully because the last thing any one needed was for someone to get transferred out of 51 because of the unnecessary drama.
Sylvie was beat. She had a lot to think about. She had confronted Hope concerning Stellaâs cheque. Hope swore she had nothing to do with it, but Sylvie was starting to think things over ever since Gaby had made her aware of her one flaw that anyone could try to use against her. She started to think that Stella was right about Hope and while she didnât want to think that, she knew that there was a chance that Hope was exploiting her friendship. She thought about going to Mollyâs, but at the same time, she didnât need to hear any âI told you soâs from Stella or Gaby. She headed home and prayed that Otis and Cruz were nowhere to be found.
Gaby was supposed to be bartending at Mollyâs tonight but she begged Stella to cover for her. Â She needed to talk to Antonio. Â She knew heâd be home. Â Ever since Eva had moved in with him, he made sure he spent some time with her before she had to go to bed. Â She headed straight to his new place. Â She had barely knocked when Eva opened the door.
âTia!â Â Eva hugged her. Â âUh, what are you doing here?â
âI came to see your dad.â Â Gaby smiled. Â âIs he here?â
Eva nodded. Â âHeâs just showering. Â Just came back from the gym.â
âAh.â Â Gaby said. Â âHe probably needs it then.â
âWill you stay for dinner?â
âDepends on what it is.â Â Gaby teased her. Â She knew that Eva had started to taking cooking lessons at school and from her grandmother.
âAbuela showed me how to make lasagna.â
âOkay, well... I think I could enjoy some lasagna.â Â Gaby followed Eva to the kitchen.
âGaby.â Â Antonio said joining them in the kitchen. Â âWhat are you doing here?â
âI came to talk to you... Eva told me she made lasagna.â
Antonio smiled. Â âSheâs a good cook. Â Ma says sheâs a really fast learner.â
âThanks, Dad.â Â Eva beamed.
âEva, why donât you make a salad and Iâm going to talk to Tia in the family room.â
âOkay, Dad.â Â She went to the fridge to collect the salad ingredients.
Gaby followed Antonio into the family room.
âOkay, sis... why you really here?â Â Antonio leaned against the doorframe.
âUh...â Â Gaby wasnât sure where to start. Â âHa... have you been seeing anyone... you know, since Brett.â
Antonioâs head jerked up. Â âWhat?!â
âAntonio, before you lose it on me... just... understand this isnât easy for me to even be talking to you about.â
âNo, Gaby. Â I havenât dated once since I walked away from Sylvie. Â Which, by the way is a decision Iâve regretted since those words left me mouth.â
Gaby sighed. Â âShe told me that you said you could never give her what she deserved.â
âI said that... and more.... and I wish I could take it all back.â Â Antonio sat on the chair across from Gaby. Â âWhatâs with asking about my love life? Â Or... lack thereof.â
âDo you still care about her?â
âGaby.â
âAntonio, just answer the question.â
âYes. Â I never stopped. Â I just... She deserves more than what I can ever give her.â Â He ran his hand through his hair. Â âSo, now you wanna explain where this train is headed?â
âUh, Dad... supperâs ready.â Â Eva poked her head in.
âMaybe you and I should go out after dinner... talk about this?â Â Gaby suggested. Â She knew her niece adored Sylvie and was still furious that Antonio and Sylvie had split.
Antonio nodded. Â âGood plan.â
After dinner, Gaby and Antonio headed over to Mollyâs. Â
âOkay, so why did you ask about my love life?â Â Antonio asked after grabbing a couple beers from Stella.
âSylvie... she... she tried to move on.â
âGaby, sheâs allowed to.â Â Antonio knew that while theyâd agreed on a check in, it hadnât happened yet. Â He knew that that meant there was a chance that sheâd find someone she deserved.
âLook, what Iâm about to tell you... Iâm telling you because I want you two happy again... and I canât stand seeing what happened today ever happen to her again.â
âGaby, what the fuck are you rambling about?â Â Antonio took a swig from his beer.
âLook, a few days back, there was a really good looking doc on a call... he called Sylvie up and they had a date. Â She was thrilled and happy. Â Not like when you two were together, but happy.â
âOkay.â Â He sighed. Â âIâm happy for her.â
âYouâre not letting me finish.â Â Gaby hissed. Â âI said she âwasâ happy.â
âWhat happened, Gaby?â Â Antonio sat up straight. Â âIs Sylvie okay?â
âNo, sheâs not.â Â Gaby downed the rest of her beer. Â âWe went to Lakeshore today... brought in a patient and then we had to restock the rig. Â I didnât know this guy worked there... but, she asked if he was on shift.â
âWhy do I have the feeling this bastard is a slime ball?â Â Antonio waved to Stella to bring them another round.
âThe charge nurse paged him and letâs say the expression he had when he saw Sylvie... he wasnât as happy to see her and she was to see him... then that same charge nurse told him that his WIFE was on the line... Sylvie almost lost it... I had to drag her to the rig... keep her mind off of it. Â She thinks sheâs a fool.â
âThat loser is the fool.â Â Antonioâs blood was boiling. Â While he had no claim over Sylvie, he cared for her. Â He would never wish her that kind of pain or embarrassment. Â
âI told her that, trust me. Â But... sheâs too caring... to kind. Â She tries... she only sees the good in people. Â You know her. Â Sheâs... well... for a lack of a better word, sheâs naive.â
Antonio sighed. Â âYeah... well... Iâd like to kick this doctorâs ass for what he did to her.â
âHave you ever thought about that check in?â Â Gaby asked.
Antonio nodded. Â âEvery day. Â I just... I donât want to hurt her. Â I can... I canât go there and risk breaking her heart all over again.â
âAntonio... I donât want to be involved in your love life... especially since Sylvie is my best friend and my partner, but... Iâve come to accept that the best thing that ever happened to either of you is each other.â
Antonio hung his head. Â He knew his sister had a point. Â âI canât give her what she deserves.â
âAnd just what does she deserve that you canât give her, Antonio?!â Â Gabyâs raised voice caused a few heads to turn.
Antonio stared at his sister. Â âI canât give her the perfect house, and white picket fence. Â I canât guarantee Laura will stay out of our lives... I have a job thatâs demanding and I...â
âStop. Â Antonio. Â Spare me the shitty excuses you give yourself from walking away from the woman who made you smiled for the first time in years. Â From the woman who showed you that it was okay to move on.â Â Her voice broke. Â âFrom the woman... who loved you.â
Antonioâs hand fell to his side. Â âWhat?â
âShe loved you... Antonio. Â She probably still does. Â She dates these people who are nothing like you. Â Iâm pretty sure itâs... itâs because sheâs not over you.â
âSo what do you want from me, Gabriela?â Â Antonio was frustrated.
âI want you to show her... that you still care... that... that you want to make it right.â Â Gaby wiped a tear from her eye. Â âI know damn well that Sylvie doesnât give a flying fuck about the perfect house... or the white fence. Â She has a job that is as demanding as being a cop... different ways, but still as demanding. Â She would rather you stand up to Laura instead of you having the balls to tell her she knew what she was getting into. Â Just... please... try... I canât stand to see either of you hurt. Â Neither can your kids.â
âHow?â
âI talk to them. Â They see the change, Antonio. Â They know what Laura did.â
âWhat... what if she says no?â Â While Antonio didnât want to hurt Sylvie anymore than he already had but he was sure that he wouldnât be able to handle the heartbreak if she said no.
âThen, you did what you told you would... Look, bro, Iâm not saying this is going to be a walk in the park, but Antonio... she loves you... and I can see by that look in your eyes, you love her too.â
âI...â Â Antonio hadnât said it out loud. Â He was scared to. Â The last woman he loved walked out on him and took everything that mattered with her. Â âI do... Gaby, I do love her.â
âThen.â Â She took his hand. Â âDo something about it.â
âWhen?â
âWeâre off for the next couple of days.â Â Gaby answered. Â âIâd try tomorrow. Â Just, go by her place. Â Cruz and Otis should be away.â
âCruz and Otis?â
âShe moved in with them.â
âWhat? Â When?â Â Antonio was feeling drastically behind the 8 ball.
âShe needed to move... her old landlord was being ridiculous... and most apartments for her budget were no where near a safe neighbourhood... the guys had a line on a place... she offered to offset the costs by being the 3rd roomie.â
âAnd thereâs nothing...â
âShe sees them as brothers, Antonio.â Â Gaby chuckled. Â âDonât worry about them. Â You and I both know that you and Sylvie belong together. Â So go and fix this.â
Antonio nodded. Â âSend me the address... Iâll go see her tomorrow.â
Antonio went to the bar and settled the tab.  He then hailed a cab and headed home.  He had a lot of thinking to do. He needed a plan on how to even get Sylvie to give him a chance to speak. He also knew that Otis and Cruz, if they were there, may give him a hard time seeing as they were âbig brothersâ to Brett.
âDad...â Eva asked Antonio when he got home.  âWhat... what was so secretive that you and Tia had to leave?â
âYouâre too curious, Eva.â
âDid it have to do with Sylvie?â
âEva.â
âNo, Dad... come on... Iâm almost an adult.â
Antonio sighed. His children were much more mature than their age and he knew Eva wouldnât leave the subject alone unless he told her.  âYeah, it was about Sylvie. Tia thinks that I should talk to her... see if sheâd give me a second chance.â
âSo... will you?â
âI want to, Eva... but Iâm not sure how.â
âWhy donât you start with âIâm sorryâ?â
âYeah... maybe.â Antonio ran his hand through his hair.  âOkay... bed. Iâve got some thinking to do.â
The next morning, Antonio got ready and headed out to see Brett. Eva had a volleyball tournament and she had been picked up by a friendâs mom. He looked in the mirror. He hadnât slept, so he looked like hell. He splashed some cold water on his face.  âNo time like the present.â He told his reflexion before grabbing his jacket and keys.
The drive to Sylvieâs was uneventful. His hands were shaking. He knew that he had to talk to her, but at the same time he was terrified that she would just slam the door in his face. He took a deep breath and went up and rang the bell.
Sure enough, Sylvie Brettâs beaming smile was right that.  âAntonio.â Sylvie was surprised to see her ex-boyfriend standing on her doorstep.  âUm... what... what are you doing here?â
âI came to talk to you... like I promised when we... I... when I said we should take a break.â
âAntonio.â
âSylvie, please... hear me out?â
Sylvie sighed. Sheâd had enough drama lately. Hope lying and trying to ruin things at 51, a lying and cheating doctor who had used her and now her ex decided to reappear.  âSure.â She stepped back and allowed Antonio in. Â
He followed her to her apartment.  âNice place.â
âIâm taking Gaby told you who my roommates are?â Sylvie sat at the island in the kitchen.
Antonio nodded.  âYeah.â He sat next to her.  âShe also told me whatâs being going on since I made the biggest mistake in my life.â
Sylvie just stared at him.  âWhat do you mean?â
âSylvie, I told you I was horrible at apologizing and I said some pretty foolish things... and I know I hurt you and I was a fool.â He stopped himself from rambling.  âI made a mistake by walking away, by not standing up for you... for being a coward.â
âAntonio, I couldâve fought too...â She whispered.
âI could see it in your eyes that night, Sylvie... you didnât want to hear that... I saw the tears... I caused that and thereâs not a thing in this world I can do to make that right or take that pain away.â
âBut?â
âIâve been avoiding the checkin... I was... I was scared you wouldnât want it... or...â
âYou were worried I wouldâve moved on.â Sylvie concluded.
Antonio nodded.  âI know I have no claim to you, but Sylvie... I was a coward... scared of my own feelings I had for you.â
âWhat feelings?â
Antonio hung his head.  âSylvie.â
âYou want a check-in, Iâll give you one... I tried dating... it got nowhere... mainly because I still prayed youâd wake up and come knock on my door. When it didnât happen, I started taking more chances. I met a guy on a call... he took me for dinner and the son-of-a-bitch is married. Iâve never been more embarrassed. I got played. Worse than when Laura appeared at 51. Iâm done chasing that fantasy. Now you tell me what feelings you were so scared of.â
âI was terrified that I was falling in love with you... the feelings I felt were so strong... and I got scared. I didnât know how to deal with Laura and my new job and those feelings... so I ran and Iâve regretted that every single day.â
Sylvie was surprised. She had been certain that Antonio had moved on.  âSo what are you asking... or telling me here?â
âSylvie... if youâll give me the second chance... Iâll do my damnedest to make it work... and I wonât run away anymore either... I want to fight for us.â
âWhat about Laura? Or the kids? Gaby?â
âEva and Gaby have both talked to me.â
âAnd?â
âWell, Eva told me I was dumber than the boys she goes to school with for ending it with you... and Gaby smacked me, chastised me and then told me whatâs been going on with you.â
âSo you knew about the doctor?â
Antonio nodded.  âAnd I personally wanna kick his ass for what he did. Youâre too good of a person to be taken advantage of.â He gently reached out and pushed a stray hair behind her ear.
Sylvie sighed. She knew that deep down she prayed Antonio would come back and they could try again, but she wasnât sure how she felt now. She was feeling like sheâd betrayed him. She gasped at the touch of his skin. It still send shivers down her spine. She cursed her body for reacting so quickly. She was still mad at him but her body betrayed that anger. She gently took his hand.  âI... Iâm willing, Antonio, to give us a second chance... but you canât let your past interfere with what we have...â
Antonio gently stroked her cheek.  âI promise. Iâm not running anymore. Laura and work will not interfere. You will be the most important thing in my life... well, other than the kids.â
âI can live with that.â Sylvie smiled.  âBut you know that we canât just go back to the way things were. Itâs almost been a year.â
âI know that. And Iâm willing to go at your pace... And I know that I have so much to make up for what I did.â Â
Sylvie sighed.  âYou broke my heart, Antonio... I wonât lie... but I havenât stopped hoping that youâd eventually come to your senses.â
âGaby said that too.â
âWell, she is my partner, and Iâm pretty sure she listened to all my moping and crying.â
Antonio sighed.  âYep, she told me that too.â
Sylvie took his hand.  âHow about we go for lunch? Catch up?â
Antonio smiled.  âSure. Iâd like that.â
âSo, Eva moved in with you?â
Antonio nodded.  âYeah... turns out that Eva wanted to be treated like an adult and that wasnât happening. Also, she really didnât get along with...â
âItâs okay, I know that Laura still will be around because of the kids.â Sylvie squeezed his hand.  âI just donât want to have her ambush me again because she does, I wonât be responsible for what happens.â
âIâll be ready to bail you out of lock up, if it comes to that.â Antonio chuckled.
âHowâs work?â
âYou mean howâs it back being in Intelligence?â
Sylvie nodded.  âIâm taking itâs been an adjustment?â
âYeah... Jayâs not over Erin leaving without saying good-bye. Ruzek is acting weird. Weâve dealt with Voightâs old partner gunning for Intelligence...â
âSo, same old, same old.â
Antonio chuckled.  âYeah. I wanted more action than I was getting with the Stateâs Attorneyâs office... and Iâve got it.â
âThen, thatâs good right?â
âYeah.â Antonio took a sip of his soda.  âHowâs things at work for you?â
Sylvie filled him in on all the goings on.
âSo, you donât buy what your friend, Hope has been telling you?â
âNot since Gaby pointed out that I allow people to take advantage of me because Iâm too nice.â
âWhat do you think?â
âI think Hope is threatened by Stellaâs feelings for Severide... and I think sheâs purposely messing with her... Iâm just not sure how I can go about it to figure out the truth. Iâve known Hope forever but Stella, Kelly, everyone... theyâre my family now.â
âWell, Sylvie... Iâve had my share of backstabbing... and if your gut instinct is saying somethingâs off... then youâre probably right.â
âI donât know. Iâve never had to do this.â Sylvie finished her meal.  âI never thought horribly about people before. Iâve never thought to see the negative in humanity.â
âSylvie, youâre the most optimistic, glass half-full person Iâve ever met, but... sadly, the world will never be unicorns and rainbows.â Â
âI know, Antonio... but I just try to see the best in everybody... and now all this.â
Antonio made a brave move and gently caressed her cheek.  âYou will always see the best in people, but remember that some people will never change... nor will they be the good people you want them to be.â
Sylvie sighed.  âIs it too soon to ask for a favour?â
âNo.â Antonio smiled.  âI think I owe you more than one.â
âCan... can you look into my friend... see what the truth really is?â
âI can some digging.â Antonio gently kissed her hand.  âBut, will you be ready for whatever truth I find?â
âIâll have to be.â Sylvie said.  âI donât wanna believe anything bad about Hope... or that sheâd try to mess things up at 51, but I donât know anymore.â
âIâll look into it.â Antonio was going to do more than just look into Hope. He was also going to dig into the doctor that had put doubt into Sylvieâs heart about her judgement of character. Â
Antonio had done his share of research on Hope Jacquinot and he wasnât impressed by what he had found. He was even less impressed by what heâd dug up on Dr. Pete Calhoun. He sighed. He didnât know who to deal with first. Â
âYo, Tonio...â Atwater said.  âWe gotta head to Lakeshore... pick up a suspect.â
âWhereâs Ruzek?â
âDunno.â Kevin shrugged.  âVoight said to grab you and go.â
âOkay.â Antonio grabbed his car keys and jacket and followed Atwater down the stairs.
Once at Lakeshore, Antonio flashed his star to the charge nurse.  âIâm Detective Dawson... this is Officer Atwater. We were told you had a suspect here?â
âFollow me.â She got up and led them to one of the trauma rooms.  âDr. Calhoun... these men are CPD... theyâre here about that gunshot.â
âThanks, Nancy.â Calhoun said.
âDr. Pete Calhoun?â Antonio asked.
âThatâs right. Have we met?â
âNo, uh we havenât.â Antonio couldnât blow this.  âMy sister mentioned that a Dr. Pete Calhoun was on site for one of the calls she responded to. Sheâs a paramedic.â
âAh, yeah... a couple weeks back... I was actually grocery shopping.â Pete stood up.  âSo, youâre here for our suspected gang related gunshot victim?â
âThatâs what we were told.â Kevin said.
âRight this way.â
Antonio let Kevin handle the paperwork and transfer. He wanted to have a word with a certain ER doctor.  âUh, Dr. Calhoun?â
âYes, Detective?â
âI know what you did.â
âI beg your pardon.â
âSylvie Brett.â Antonio said.
Calhounâs eyes widened.  âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âI know youâre married, but you like to still play the field... probably has something to do with the fact that your wife is pregnant... but see, I know Sylvie... I care a lot about her and what you did was lower than low.â
âI... I...â Calhoun stuttered.
Antonio wound up and delivered a clear swing at the doctor.  âYou stay away from Sylvie... and I wonât tell your wife that youâve banged almost every nurse in this ER.â
Calhoun fell back onto a chair.  âI... I...â
âDid I make myself clear? Leave her alone, or next time, Iâll bring a few more friends. No one takes advantage of my girl and gets away with it.â Antonio said before stalking out of the room to go meet up with Atwater.
Sylvie was freaking out, but to be fair the whole firehouse was. Stella was being transferred and there was nothing anyone could do about it. She knew that Gaby had her hands full with the things going on with Matt since heâd been made Captain. She dialled the one person who might be able to help her. Â
âSylvie?â Antonioâs strong voice began to calm her.
âHey, um... can you talk?â
âSure... everything okay?â
Sylvie broke down.  âNO! NO! Everything is not okay!â She told him everything.
âOkay... babe... just breathe... Iâm going to come in... talk to Matt and Chief Boden. Weâll get to the bottom of this.â Antonio promised.
âOkay... thank you... I just didnât know who to call.â
âHey, itâs what Iâm here for.â Antonio said.  âIâll see you soon.â
It didnât take long for Antonio, Casey and Chief to piece together what had really happened. Once Chief Mullins cleared up a few things, Antonio went and got all the evidence and information heâd been able to dig up on Hope. Theyâd need everything possible to make sure Hope Jacquinot would leave Chicago for good.
Antonio met Casey, Chiefs Mullins and Boden in the meeting room. Antonio presented everything his investigation had turned up. Â
âHope... can you join us in here for a moment?â Chief Boden asked Hope as she passed by the meeting room.
âUh, sure, Chief.â
âCaptain Casey has something heâd like to discuss with you.â
Hopeâs demeanour changed drastically as she saw who was all in the meeting room. Â
Casey showed her the transfer papers.  âThese are the papers that were sent in to have Kidd transferred to Public Relations. It was signed by Chief Mullins, which is fine... except this isnât his signature.â
Chief Mullins stepped up to the whiteboard and signed his name. âThis is my signature.â
Hopeâs eyes betrayed the fake smile she had glued onto her face.
Casey held out a form that Hope had previously filled out for Connie concerning the storage closet.  âThis is your handwriting.â
Antonio stepped forward. âAnd that I can say has formally been analyzed by a CPD hand writing analyst.â Â
âWho are you?â Hope asked.
âDetective Antonio Dawson... I know all about you Hope... I know how youâre Sylvieâs best friend... how you abused her kindness and used her to get everything youâve ever wanted. Weâre all here to put an end to it.â
Hope tried to make excuses for what she had done. She was stammering through how she wanted to give women a better position in the CFD.
Boden put his hand up.  âStop!â He bellowed.  âJust, stop.â He looked to the others before looking back to Hope.  âPack your desk.â
âWhat?!â
âIâm saving everyone else from having more trouble. Pack your desk and then Detective Dawson will escort you from the property. Do not come back to this firehouse.â Boden opened the door.  âI strongly recommend you leave Sylvie alone... Detective Dawson will take her safety extremely personally and that means her psychological safety as well...â
Antonio took Hope by the elbow and led her out to the hallway where Connie was waiting with a box of Hopeâs things.
Connie had a pleased smile on her face.  âI went ahead and sped this up for you.â She dropped the box in Hopeâs arms before taking the files from Hopeâs hands and smugly walking back to her desk.
âThis way.â Antonio led Hope to the doors to the apron.  âDonât darken Sylvieâs doorstep... trust me. That family that you just spat on and tried to ruin, theyâll never let you hurt her again. But, theyâre the least of your worries. See... I love Sylvie... I never stopped... and you probably donât know this, but weâve started to mend our relationship. You try to come near her again... Iâm gonna introduce you to my boss, and you wonât like him.â
Hope stammered as Antonio got her into a waiting cab and slammed the door. He watched and waited as the cab pulled away. He had gotten Al to be the cabbie and to make sure Hope was sent packing for good. After hearing all the mess sheâd caused, he only hoped this help show Sylvie that she wasnât naive or gullible. He had spent the morning trying to show her that she was good and that she shouldnât feel the way she was. Â
âIs she gone?â Sylvieâs soft whisper broke his silent train of thought.
Antonio spun and saw her. Tears were still streaming down her face. He walked over to her and pulled her into his arms.  âYeah. Iâm so sorry, Sylvie... I never... You donât deserve this.â
âI trusted her.â Sylvie sniffled.
Antonio rubbed her back.  âI know. I know you did, but Sylvie... what sheâs done isnât on you... itâs on her.â
âI brought her here.â
âNo, babe... you didnât.â He wiped her tears away.  âShe came, and she burned every bridge that you and this family were willing to build for her. And when she gets back to Fowlerton, sheâll answer for the crimes that she was accused of there.â
âYou called their PD?â Sylvieâs question was barely audible.
âI did... I wonât have her hurting you anymore. Iâve done enough damage for a couple lifetimes. I donât want you to be hurt anymore. I want you to smile... and laugh... like when we first started seeing each other.â
âI donât think I could ever be that girl again.â
âHey, you can... you will... you need time to heal.â
âI canât wait for this shift to be over.â
âBrett.â Chiefâs voice startled them.
âUh, Chief.â Sylvie wiped the freshest tears from her eyes.
âGo home.â
âShift isnât over.â
âIt is for you. Thereâs an hour left. Gaby said sheâll do the paperwork.â Boden looked to Antonio.  âAntonio, please take her home.â
âYou got it, Chief.â Antonio grabbed the bag that Boden was holding out.  âCome on.â
Antonio pulled up to Sylvieâs apartment and let her out while he went to park his truck.
Sylvie waited for him to come back and while she was waiting Hope made her way up to her. Â
âSylvie... Iâm so, so, so sorry!â
âNo.â Sylvie walked away.  âI donât wanna hear it.â
âSylvie, please... theyâre all trying to turn you...â Hope tried grabbing Sylvieâs arm.
âNo!â Sylvie swatted her away.
âSylvie! You know me!â Hope kept trying to keep talking.  âConnie... she had it out for me from the start...â
âSTOP!â Sylvie screeched.  âHow could you?! How could you do this to me?!â Sylvie did something sheâd only ever thought about doing. She slapped Hope.  âYou came here. You abused our friendship... you tried to ruin EVERYTHING... Everything Iâve ever built here.â
Hopeâs hand flew to her cheek.  âSyl...â
âHey!â Antonioâs strong voice brought more strength to Sylvie.
Sylvie got right in Hopeâs face.  âThese people... they mean more to me than anyone or anything every has. Get out of Chicago.â Â
When Hope just stood there, looking to say more.
Antonio had finally joined them. He grabbed her and slapped some cuffs on her wrists.  âWell, since you didnât listen to me the first time, maybe youâll listen this time.â
Sylvie was furious.  âYou had a chance... the most amazing chance to have an incredible life with incredible friends... working at the best firehouse in this city. Thatâs a fact... and you blew it!â She stared straight into Hopeâs soul.  âSo, you can take all your excuses... your lies... take your drama and take it all back to Fowlerton!â Sylvie stormed off into the apartment. She looked back to Antonio.  âIâll wait for you.â
Antonio nodded as Sylvie closed the door.  âSo, my boss is on his way... and I wasnât kidding when I told you that you werenât going to like him.â
Sylvie was exhausted and it wasnât just just because sheâd been on shift for 24 hours prior. She was exhausted from sobbing and having her heart stomped on so many times in such a short period of time. She was just changing laundry over when her doorbell rang. She knew that Otis and Cruz were out discussing the possibility of a second Mollyâs. She went to the door and was just praying that Hope wouldnât be on the other side of it.
âHey.â Antonioâs smile helped ease the pain she was feeling. Â
âHey.â She wrapped her arms around him.  âIs it FINALLY over?!â
âIt is.â He held her tightly.  âDetectives from Fowlerton are on their way now to deal with her... well, negotiate whatâs going to happen with her considering what sheâd done here in Chicago.â
âDo I want to know?â
âProbably best for your emotional state if you donât.â He stroked her arm.  âI got you something.â
âAntonio... you didnât have to.â
âWell...â He held out a grocery bag.  âI figured we could watch a movie and eat some of the ice cream you like so much.â
âThat... that I can live with.â She kissed him softly.  âThank you.â
âFor what?â
âFor being my hero... I shouldâve just kept holding out for you.â
âYou did.â He closed the door behind them.  âYou held out, fought the dragons and now weâre here.â
âDoes this mean we get a âhappily ever afterâ?â
âIn time.â He led her to the living room and grabbed the remote.  âOne day at a time.â Â
A/N: There you go! Okay... so it has only taken me close to 3 weeks to write it, but itâs done and I think itâs pretty fabulous. I really hate Hope... and I really hate that doctor for hurting Sylvie. Please... let me know what you think of this! I really love hearing your feedback. Until next time... Nicole
