Rosie Darling! Your wife has arrived with a prompt!
"You couldn't survive without me. Don't ever delude yourself into thinking otherwise."
Lou! I was torn on what to write for you, but I had Ene's help in picking an AU and you get a ficlet of the hybrids illegal fighting ring AU Lu @/ardeidae-e and I keep screaming about, enjoy â¤ď¸
He spat globs of blood onto the ground.
The crowd in the risers continued cheering long after a victor had been declared, long after his opponent had been taken away on a stretcher held together by wood and thin cloth.
âI made it this far without anyone, and dammit Iâll keep going until I canât anymore.â
Until he physically couldnât anymore. Some days time went by in a blur where all he remembered was waking to a pointed needle glimmering between his eyes. Some days he remembered every agonizing minute from dawn âtil dusk, counting the moments down until the others went quiet and the sound of shackles dragging across the floor stilled. Just to repeat it all the very next day.
âWhy?â The bunk above him creaked and a head popped out from over the edge, ears twitching in interest. Chuuya reached for and touched one of his own, feeling for anything missing. He hadnât had one of his ears clipped yet. âEveryone in here is like you and meâjust trying to survive, but whoâs to say it wonât be you getting dragged out of the ring next by the medics? The crowd really loves a good performance, and the best performers are those at deathâs door.â
ââWhyâ? So I should just accept my fate and lie down and take it? Hell no! Iâm not accepting that this is the end and I canât do anything about it.â
Dragging himself over to the closest wall and propping himself against it, he shot Dazai a glare. In the time that theyâve shared a cell together, Chuuya never knew what he was in for. Never saw him fighting. But he still looked as beaten up as all the others, sleep deprivation tugging at his reddening eyes and his mop of hair hiding what once were loose curls. Unlike Chuuya, he had a normal enough looking tail, mesmerized by the sight of it swishing around in the air side-to-side like a pendulum.
âMm, even if you did decide to give up, I think itâs an unspoken clause that the ring wonât allow one of its best fighters to just give up. Iâm not even being allowed to give up, and trust me when I say Iâve tried everything to take myself out. You have to keep going until the people say so, how miserably wonderful.â
Dazai sounded gleeful as he spoke, as if making light of their situation would somehow wash away the reality that two, sometimes more, often went into the ring and the same number didnât come out. That this was all just a bad dream he would wake up from sooner or later. Oh, he wished too strongly that one day this would all become a figment of his imagination and heâd be back on the streets cutting his teeth out in the world again.
Surviving was all he seemed to know how to do.
Chuuya winced as he tried to sit up straight and clutched his side. The skin was hot to the touch and an angry red radiated from where teeth sank in and formed a deep bite mark. âYouâve been through it and back, huh? You talk like youâve been here for a while now and seen it all.â
âItâs not like weâre given a choice in what we want to do day-by-day that would change things up much. Some fight, some are wheeled out to the medical ward for experimentation, some just lie in their cell all day. Thatâs it.â Dazai rolled over and sat up before hopping out of the bunk, landing with cat-like grace. His feet barely made a sound hitting the concrete and approaching Chuuya.
That kind of silence did not come naturally.
âSpeaking of, theyâll probably be coming for you soon, huh? Looks like you got injured pretty bad in that fight.â Bending at the waist, Dazai tilted his head from one side to the other, examining Chuuya from head-to-toe with a critical eye that made him shrink in on himself. âYouâll need antiseptic for those bites before they become infected. Last thing they want is their best fighter spiking a fever and being bedridden for days. Itâll cost them money.â
âBack up, will you?â Chuuya muttered, grimacing. âYou donât need to be all up in my space staring at me like that. I just need some air and youâre not helping.â
âWhat, Iâm not even close enough to touch you! Canât I look? Iâve been staring at the wall all day listening to the excitement and screaming, I need something else now.â
ââŚI did it because I had to.â
Dazai waved a hand and stepped back before sitting and crossing his legs. âYou donât have to explain yourself to me. Even if I cared or wanted to know, so what? We donât have a choice here, like I said.â
âItâs not to explain myself, itâsâŚâ Chuuya drew a ragged breath and tilted his head back against the wall, closing his eyes. He didnât know what words he was looking for or what he hoped to gain from telling Dazai anything. Maybe speaking aloud that he wasnât a monster and that he got no pleasure from being forced to kill someone made it true as opposed to simply thinking it. He wanted to be told he wasnât a monster, and he wouldnât get that from Dazai. There was no concept of right from wrong in here. âItâs whatever. I donât want to die in here, so I fight. The men in suits want to break us so we grow numb to everything and accept things as they are, and I refuse to.â
âOh?â Dazaiâs ears twitched again and he leaned in closer with a twinkle in his eyes. âYouâre saying stage a rebellion? Dangerous thing to say so openly when we could be walked in on any moment, but you have my attention.â
âIâm saying fuck the mafia and fuck the people supporting this shit knowing whatâs going on behind closed doors. Weâre being treated like circus acts with encores for more while people are dropping dead.â

hi Rosiie!! this prompt from the list you shared made me instantly think of beast skk
"Well, then, if I really ruined your life like you saym why don't you just kill me? We both know you're good at that."
hi Shannon! have this horribly delayed ficlet of 18!beast skk and corruption gone wrong <3
Evening draws its purple light across the ballroom floor.
Chuuya sits in a puddle of blood both his own and his enemyâs. There was no one to catch him falling, hurtling toward Earth this timeâthat personâs beaten and unresponsive right next to him with both eyes gently shut as if in a pleasant sleep and not knocked unconsciousâso he crashed as the last body dropped and all went silent except for his ragged panting.
Life itself within him wants to scream and he can barely choke out a sob. It hurts all over. He counts the seconds and repeats from one to ten over and over expecting to also fall unconscious at any moment. His bodyâs never lasted past ten. Itâs been at least a few minutes, probably a lot more, and blood continues to gush from his wounds and paint the tiles people once danced on that turned into a war zone overnight.
âDazaiâŚ,â he says through clenched teeth and looks down at the lifeless body of his partner, bandages soaked red and with grime. His fringe is matted and curls over his invisible eye. âI know you can hear me. Youâre not dead. YouâŚâ
The bite in his voice weakens and becomes nothing. He counts down until Dazai opens his eyes and repeats the cycle endlessly like the night Chuuya carried him back to his car from the compound he was held captive in.
âOf course this was all part of my plan. What do you take me for?â
âThat guy called you âBandagesâ. How does he know you?â
âDonât worry about it.â
Worrying over Dazai was something he never did. It came easily to him when they first met at fifteen and Dazai was nothing but an insufferable waste of bandages always having a snide remark to everything. Calling him a little fairy. Telling him to keep drinking milk or else Dazai will overshoot him in height one day.
âNow, donât get me wrong, Chuuya. I never said that I found something worth living for, I simply said that itâs worth sticking around a little longer to see what comes next. Hey, Randou was kind of weird, wasn't he? Calling people a bunch of patterns. I would've liked to pick his brain a little more before he died.â
Itâs been a little over three years and it feels ten times as long as that.
He sees Dazaiâs grubby hands reaching for him, covered in mud and other unknown substances threatening to stain his own suit, and a slimy voice purring in his ear with a thorny smile to match. His fingers grow cold as he loses feeling in them and a sickening warmth bubbles in his stomach. When he blinks, Dazai is nowhere to be found except on the floor still, never having moved.
âIs this all part of your plan too?â he asks the room to receive a silent reply.
He begins to sway until his back hits the floor with a thud and the air is knocked out of him, though heâs conscious of the fact that heâs still awake as he continues to breathe in and out, admiring the shattered kaleidoscope-paned ceiling ridden with bullet holes and human-sized craters. A distant door from somewhere below slams open and he hallucinates an army of men stampeding inside and up the stairs. Maybe theyâre real. Maybe theyâre not. His ears continue to ring from pistols fired long ago.
As it grows quiet once more, he turns his head to where Dazai lies as still as many of the dead bodies surrounding them. âHey, get upâŚâ
Itâs pointless to waste the last of his energy on someone who hasnât answered him from the start; he supposes heâs a fucking fool for thinking Dazai invincible like the cockroach heâs been since day one. He, too, bleeds. He, too, isnât impervious to human error. Chuuya remembered the panic on Dazaiâs face as he finished the incantation to Corruption, running toward him and reaching out to him before being blown back by the impact of gravity and gunfire colliding. The panic was so sudden when Dazai was previously confident delivering his ultimatum, as if a change of heart split his mask right down the middle.
âAh⌠Drat. I forgot my pen. I guess I wonât be drawing on your face this time. Rest easy, Chuuya.â
âIâm wide awake, you asshole.â His growl dies down to a weak laugh and he lifts an arm to drape it across Dazaiâs torso, expecting an indignant whine. Expecting to be shoved away. A sign of life. Fucking anything. Is he the one awake? Is he the one unconscious?
âI suppose I have no other choice but to do this, then. In order to protect this world I need you and the Port Mafia, and I canât afford to lose you.â
Chuuya starts to smile and itâs the only thing that comes easily. His fingers curl in Dazaiâs tattered dress shirt, itching to grab him, shake him, scream at him, but all he can do is move his hand over old scar tissue to where Dazaiâs heart faintly beats underneath.
Will you ever tell me what you meant by that?
Twilightâs glow grows faint and becomes black, the mosaic ceiling tunneling and turning into a barely-perceptible light until it, too, goes out like a candle flame and nothing exists anymore.
Oooo Helena by my chemical romance is such a vibe!!
this song makes me so sad and I love it, it's so beast skk
anyway, here you go <3
âRemind me again why Iâm the one doing this? Iâm no family member of his. Never was. None of us is.â
âBecause he has no known living family members. It then becomes the closest living successor to perform the ritual.â
In other words, someone had to do it, and the burden fell on Chuuya, as usual.
To call him close with Dazai was such a fucking joke that he couldnât help but smile bitterly. Whatever they had, if they ever had something more than partners, Dazai had razed it to the ground and turned it to ash with his remains.
I canât do this.
I can do this.
If I canât do this, I donât deserve to lead the Port Mafia.
These thoughts flooded the forefront of his mind and he let them. Like the tide, theyâd recede and go back to the depths where they came from. He took the chopsticks and ignored his trembling hand to focus on the pile of ashes laid out in front of him, bone fragments sticking out of it.
He was looking at what used to be a person.
Iâm going to be sick.
No, he could do this. He went through much worse in the past: walking into the slaughter of his old friends, opening a trunk to find a dead body, the time spent tortured as a lab experiment. Dazai didnât exist anymore. This was nothing. It paled in comparison.
If he had any sort of worth still, it was to the organization that had become his family. He hadnât become Dazaiâs underboss out of goodwill or favoritism for being his partner in the past. He knew how to lead all too well. And always against his wishes.
The pile smelled like gravel and dust. No air circulated in the cramped room. Chuuya clicked the chopsticks together a few times to test his grip, his ability to carry out this final order required of him. Even in death, he could not be left alone. If death couldnât separate them, then nothing would.
âWhat do I pick out first?â
âThe feet, sir,â a man said from behind. âThe bones of the head come last. Among them, the nodobotoke is the most important bone that comes right before the head to ensure the remains arenât placed upside-down in the urn.â
âOut of respect, right?â
âCorrect.â
Chuuya suppressed the urge to scoff and dug his chopsticks into the ashes, picking out the phalanges and metatarsals, dropping them into the urn beside him with a tiny, hollow clunk. Two hundred plus bones for him to go through, two hundred plus reasons he had to hate Dazai, all failing to surface when he needed that anger the most. The anger left him long ago when he punched a hole in the wall of the very office that used to be Dazaiâs and now belonged to him. When he let out a final, pent-up scream to the world.
All the missed calls. Atsushiâs pleading face for him to do the impossible.
Dazai really was just a man in his final moments. He built a fortress and isolated himself from the few who knew his past selfâthe real him. It happened around seventeen when Chuuya no longer knew who or what became of his partner, just that they looked like a young Dazai Osamu impersonating him.
âAre you all right, sir?â
Time was running out. He didnât have much time left to pay respects. The quicker he collected the bones, the quicker Dazai would become a distant memory. One by one, he dropped more of the bones into the urn until forced to push the ashes around in search of more bones. The fingers. The arms. The ribs that once held a heart, however distorted. And the entire time Chuuya still wanted to laugh, like this was the biggest joke of all being played on him. He hadnât had such a vivid nightmare in years. He was bound to wake up at some point and put it behind him, right?
At times he dug through the ashes hesitantly, and others more forcefully, stabbing the pile and kicking up a small cloud of dust. He wanted to desecrate them the way Dazai had destroyed his soul; even the fragile voice in Chuuyaâs mind calling him a piece of shit struggled to form the thought and believe in it. This was supposed to be something sacred and intimate, and it was nothing more than a parody at his expense.
He could still be a piece of shit for what he did. But he could also still mean something to Chuuya despite that.
The door opened and closed behind him with a quiet click, leaving him alone.
âI hope youâre rotting wherever you are, making me do this,â Chuuya muttered, squeezing the chopsticks in his fist. A little more and theyâd snap clean in half, and heâd no longer be able to continue picking through Dazaiâs bones. âYou donât have power over me anymore, and yet youâre still ordering me around from the grave.â
Tears pricked his vision and he blinked them away. That anger was lying dormant somewhere inside him; he just needed to summon it and channel it through his veinsâsomething he had done a thousand times before just imagining Dazaiâs stupid face and slimy voice. He opened his mouth to speak before closing it again with a hard swallow, baring his teeth in a sneer.
There wasnât much left to go through: the neck bones, the nodobotoke, the head. What shouldâve been the easiest ones for him, but now he faltered and stared at the pile.
Any resolve he willed from the fragments of his soul faded away. The chopsticks fell on the table and clattered to the floor, deafening in the silence. He cradled his head in his hands and grabbed his hair, struggling to steady his ragged breathing, struggling to force down the panic clawing its way up his throat. Air. He needed air.
â worship me. until i tell you to stop. â + skk (beast maybe? whatever inspires you the most đ)
take your time đŤśđť
Aimi! I bring you beast!skk pain and Dazai surviving and the consequences of his actions đ
cw for Beast!Dazai's attempt
He felt warm. Protected, even. Dazai remembered hitting the concrete and drowning in a puddle face down. Too cold, in too much pain for him to process what had happened, except that everything grew dark and his body became numb. The sirens approaching from a distance meant that help was on the way, but that help came too late. He heard the wet steps of feet next to him, splashing him.
The second thing he realized was that he could see with both eyes. Harsh beams of light beat down on him, as cold and sanitary as the room he found himself in. Everything was pure white, and he knew he couldnât have found his way to heavenâa place he didnât belong inâso this must be some kind of purgatory.
How awful. But he knew not to expect kindness even after death.
A steady beep to his left pulled him out of his thoughts, and his eyes followed a bundle of wires hooked up to a monitor. He watched some of the numbers go up and down, followed by another beep, and thought it strange that his vitals were being monitored. He didnât have a pulse. He wasnât breathing. And yet he let out a shaky breath and turned his head away, the pillow underneath criminally soft as if it had been recently fluffed just for him.
Dazai stared vacantly out the window, watching rain droplets slide down it. The faint rumbling of thunder filled silent gaps until he heard a knock at the door.
Who would be visiting him? And why?
He swallowed, wincing from how dry his throat was, and tried to speak, but nothing came out except for a hoarse noise. He watched the handle turn and the door open to revealâ
To reveal someone who should still be alive. Someone who shouldnât be here with him. His eyes widened, and he sank back against the bed with nowhere to go, limbs still heavy, and his chest aching. All the pain had suddenly resurfaced like he had been engulfed in flames, and his mind screamed where he physically couldnât.
Chuuya approached in a swift stride, and there was nowhere for Dazai to go. He held a blank expression that Dazai couldnât decipher, but the strangest thing about this encounter was the wine-colored scarf around Chuuyaâs shoulders. The same one Dazai had died in.
âYouâre awake,â Chuuya said, stopping at Dazaiâs bedside. He gave a look-over of the body trapped in bed and covered in blankets before looking up at the monitor. A small, strained smile began to play on his lips, but he looked like he was trying not to grit his teeth. âItâs been a bit. They said your coma couldâve lasted a long time, maybe months or more, considering what happened. But they also said it helps for the person unconscious to hear someone talking to them because it might wake them up sooner.â
âAwake?â Dazai echoed, his eyes darting from Chuuyaâs face to the faraway wall, taking in everything again. This was a hospital. He was being kept alive. How did he survive? âThatâs impossible, I had everything calculated down to the moment. From the height I fell from, I shouldnât have survived.â His voice rose in a panic and a finger came upon his lips, gently shushing him.
âNot so loud. The walls are thinner than you think.â Chuuya leaned over to get a good look at Dazaiâs face, his smile widening. It was unsettling, like he was peering into Dazaiâs soul. Something was wrong. âYouâre right, Dazai. Youâre supposed to be dead to everyone who knows what happened. Thatâs why you canât be loud.â
This person sounded and looked like Chuuya, but was this the Chuuya he had known since he was a teen? The eyes staring back at him looked unfocused, manic, hiding a secret he didnât dare wonder about. A look he had never seen from the Chuuya he had known.
âChuuya?â
âDazai.â
No boss.
âWhat happened?â
âEverything went right to shit when you died,â Chuuya said lowly. He grabbed Dazai by the chin, fingers pressed into his jaw, forcing him to keep looking. âI was in a bit of a bad mood. You left me having to pick up all the pieces and take on being the new leader. You left me having to explain what happened, and how could I tell anyone in the organization that you offed yourself? It doesnât inspire confidence.â His gloveless fingers dug in harder, and Dazai shrank back against the pillow, trying to free himself from Chuuyaâs hold until the pressure suddenly lifted and the eyes on him softened into an apologetic look.
âThat still doesnât make sense,â Dazai muttered. âThereâs no way I wouldâve survived that fall. How didââ
A finger silenced him again. âOh, Dazai, Dazai, Dazai. You finally got your supposed wish to die, and now itâs all youâre thinking about instead of literally anything else. Do you hate that youâre alive? Do you hate that I didnât let you die? Remember the time you told me you wanted to see me suffer as a human years ago?â
Dazaiâs eyes widened. âI never said that to you, I said it toââ
âYou said it while I was unconscious. You were doing this,â Chuuya began and reached out to run his fingers through Dazaiâs limp hair before tucking a few strands of hair behind his ear, âwhile apologizing for what was to come in the future. I heard it all before I actually blacked out, and I didnât understand what you meant at the time, but now I get it. The things you refused to tell me, the weird ways you used to act, how you knew too much.â
His breath rattled in his chest. Chuuya knew. But how much did he know? Dazai didnât want him to find out like this, and he had no way of explaining himself except that he did what he had to against his will, not wanting any of this for himself, for them, for the world. An apology died in his throat.
âBut, whatever, itâs done and over with. Youâre dead, your graveâs full of flowers, I found out Mori-san is still alive, and even heâs changed. Elise is acting a bit differentâlike you. And I told him to cut that shit out.â Chuuya sighed, a hint of conflict in his eyes before he turned to Dazaiâs ear. âAnd after being caught in a bad mood, I got revenge on the man who killed youâthe man who was haunting you for as long as I knew you. You did what you had to, and I did what I had to. Now you can rest. Thereâs nothing left for you to do but live quietly undercover while I take on your burdens you left me with.â
The words were anything but comforting. Dazai shook harder and a hand cupped his cheek, simulating the touch of a lover. He did not lean into it. He did not move.
This was a Chuuya he once knew, and now knew no longer. Everything he did, everything he sacrificed, everything they had suffered through was for nothing.
âYouâll get to come home soon if you hurry up and recover. Youâll stay with me until I figure out what to do with you.â
Grief, guilt, and remorse all tore their way out of his throat at once, a guttural wail in the silence.
"Do you think that one more corpse means anything to me?"
All I see is Beast SKK in your prompts Rosie... sorry for another <3
Lou!! as promised, here's 1,188 words of 18!beast skk and the aftermath of them fighting Mimic/Gide
He thinks of afternoons spent with Dazaiâhis boss, his ex-partner, his ex-promiseâas business. Dazai is a man whose interest could be bought not with money, but with playthings that interested him. Transactional, in every sense of the word, and Chuuyaâs been his plaything since the first few weeks they had met.
And like with all playthings, there will come a time when their owner grows tired of them. Or they simply grow up. Thereâs nothing new or exciting or fresh about their relationship anymore; the spark is gone. A candle snuffed out. But Dazai has yet to toss Chuuya in the trash and move on to the next thing.
Chuuya thought like this once when he was sixteen or so, and after two betrayals too many by people he had called his friends. Dazaiâs had one foot out the door for as long as he could remember, a briefcase under the bed packed and ready to go at a momentâs notice.
He thought like this because, as he sits on the floor covered in blood both his own and his enemyâs, he remembers all the empty promises made to him by others over the years. A detective with his hand out, ready to show Chuuya the light. A band of losersâhe called them thenâthe Flags, a group he could find a home in when he struggled to adjust to the mafia. The Sheep: a group of kids all around his age and all homeless, worn down by the rough streets and slums, counting the blood money they had made by the campfire and sleeping with knives. They had fed him, kept him alive, and made use of him, and now they were all but a distant memory.
The only constant in his life is Dazai now. Someone fickle and commitment-avoidant, whoâd do anything including hurting himself, to not promise Chuuya anything like others had.
Twice heâs hurt himself to not say that word. Theyâre eighteen now, teetering between life and death, surrounded by corpses. Chuuya remembers back then when Dazai had stabbed himself to force Corruption. It left him with no choice when Dazai could no longer walk and Shibusawa was hot on their heels, destroying every pillar they had tried to hide behind.
This time is slightly different.
âYouâre such⌠a damn idiot sometimes,â Chuuya forces out. Every breath feels like itâs his last, like his own lungs are drowning him. But Dazai is alive despite how ghostly pale he looked and how cold his skin was to the touch. If he wasnât, then he couldnât have nullified Corruption.
One more corpse means nothing to him when he sits in the middle of a graveyard that used to be a grand ballroom, the stench making his stomach turn.
If Dazai dies, then he has to explain how it all came to this. He has to explain how Dazai knew Mimic and Gide would be here. Heâd have to explain why Dazaiâs blood is on his hands, and why heâs nothing more than a murderer. That thought stings only because this is not him. Corruption makes a wild animal out of him and he doesnât want it, but Dazaiâs always forcing it out of him. He crawls forward with the last of his strength and lifts Dazaiâs head onto his lap. It falls limply.
Heâd had to explain why he killed his own partner.
No. Even suffering through multiple betrayals, Chuuya could never turn on those he called his own.
âWhyâd you do that?â Chuuya whispers, his hand on Dazaiâs cheek. Thereâs no warmth, and every breath that leaves him rattles in his chest. He always looked a lot younger with his eyes closed, expressionless, like he was at peace for once. Chuuya couldnât relate, but if Dazai could achieve peace, maybe there was a light at the end of their bleak tunnel that he could have for himself one day. âI told you to get away and take cover when I used it. And you did the opposite. You got in my damn way,â Chuuya laughs bitterly. Or, he tries to, but all that comes out is a wheeze. âYou got in my way like you always do.â
And now youâre dying.
Itâs different when Chuuya feels like heâs dying. Heâs used to it. But heâs not used to having Dazai die on him. Thereâs nothing for him to do but sit there and cradle the body of his partner taking his last breaths. Helpâs already on the way, but heâs too weak to move from his spot. The flickering lights of the room grow dim, and darkness curtains his vision. Heâs almost out of time himself before he loses consciousness, but he has to hang on until he knows Dazaiâs alive and will remain alive.
He remembers when they were sixteen and Dazai had done the same thing he was doing nowâholding him close, silently ruminating until reinforcements arrived. If Dazai had spoken to him like Chuuya was now, he didnât recall.
Chuuya scoffs. Dazai wouldnât have had anything kind to say as his snotty sixteen-year-old self, but in the depths of unconsciousness he felt watched over. Safe.
Does Dazai feel safe now? Is he letting go while Chuuyaâs hanging on because he feels safe enough to pass away in his partnerâs arms? Heâd never forgive Dazai for dying here. Smoke circles them, and he coughs some of it out. He needs to lie down, and he canât resist it anymore as he drags himself halfway on top of Dazai, collapsing over him.
âJust wait until we get back. Iâll⌠give you a piece of my mind for what you did. And Iâll make you tell me why you got in my way,â Chuuya rasps, draping an arm across Dazaiâs torso. Itâs his last attempt at protecting both of them until his eyes close and his face twists in pain.
I knew you wanted to die, but not by my hands. Not like this. You gave me no say.
Corruption ripped the illusion of choice from him. Friend or foe didnât matter when unbridled power thrummed through his veins and threatened to consume him if he didnât destroy. He couldnât stop himself from hurling a swirling mass of gravity at Dazai. Chuuya only came to his senses after lunging at Dazai, the realization of what he had done like ice-cold water dumped over him. He didnât remember attacking Dazai because it wasnât him who did that. And as he looked between his hands covered in gushing cuts and down at his partner, he asked in a small voice, Dazai?, but there was no answer.
The cackle that tore itself from his throat died down to a choked noise. Dazai looked younger, and Chuuya felt youngerâa small child who thought himself abandoned.
This is all business, and yet it hurts more deeply than the wounds covering his body.
Now, Dazaiâs heart is weak against him, but he still breathes, and itâs with this reminder that Chuuya, too, lets go to the sound of doors busting open and feet storming the room.

hehe hi Aimi!! as expected I have 983 words of beast!skk shortly after Dazai becomes boss
âThe Port Mafia boss who clawed his way to the top of the organization after assassinating the previous boss to become the most feared man in the underworld is scared of my heart,â Chuuya says with a wry smile, finger wrapped around the trigger. His hand trembles, and the gun starts to shake.
If Chuuya shot him, it would be by accident.
Heâll never fear a gunânot when itâs in the hands of the one person in the world he trusts the most.
His own heart scares him some days, when he wakes up gasping for air or thinks about all the memories theyâre losing to time. When he sits at his desk and reflects on the other versions of them on different sides, still managing to be partners as one fights for good and the other lives by evil.
A gun is predictable. It can shoot to kill. And a heart is everything a gun is not.
âYour heart is both a weapon that can kill you and everyone around you and also save you.â
Where his beats blood through his veins, Chuuyaâs is not so simpleâitâs scarred over and struggling. Itâs suffered through countless deaths and carries long-lost friends within it. In this world, itâs only happened once to him.
This is now the second time Dazaiâs watched the same people die. The second time heâs witnessed Chuuya captured and tortured for the sin of wanting to be like everyone else. Chuuyaâs heart is not used to this pain; itâs raw and fragile. Dazaiâs is hardened. Itâs never known friendship or love in this world. It aches for a reality that he can only dream about. He knew those terrible days would come when they were younger and still could not prepare himself for the screams that continue to haunt him to this day.
Chuuyaâs eyes are wild, and he wears a feral smile. Itâs the last thing his enemies would see before being blown to bits, and now that itâs trained on Dazai, he feels a strange ache in his chest.
âWhat do you want me to say? That you won? Congratulate you for killing the last person standing in your way?â Chuuyaâs voice wavers, and the gun falls to his side. âWell, good-fucking-job. You won, Dazai. And no oneâs gonna applaud you for doing what we all knew would happen one day.â
This is what Dazai fears of Chuuya. Heâs a sweeping maelstrom of tragedies and bottled-up emotions, and Dazai has found himself in the eye of it, waiting for the calm as he braves the storm that is his partner.
Everyoneâs either gone or dead. The last person in Dazaiâs way is gone, off to live undercover as part of his plan. To Chuuya, Mori might as well be dead.
He closes the distance between them before Chuuya has a change of heart and shoots. Heâs accepted dying as something inevitable in the near future, but he does not want to die by a hateful bullet and look upon what heâs done to Chuuya and what heâs taken away from him. His other self couldnât have predicted the events that unfolded when they were teenagers, but here, he has no excuse to pave his world with death just to let one man who doesnât even know he exists live.
Oda had called him a good man at sixteen for suggesting he turn to the Armed Detective Agency if ever in a time of need. But anyone can pretend to be good hiding beneath the rim of a hat.
âYou hate that you have to pledge yourself to me now, right? Iâm everything you said you never were and would never be.â A hand rests on top of Chuuyaâs and lifts the gun until it sits at Dazaiâs chest. Chuuya bares his teeth in a scowl, and for a moment it looks like his Chuuya has returned to the forefrontâa living, breathing fireâand all Dazai can do is smile sadly at whatâs become of them both.
If someone were to not leave this room covered in bloodshed, let it be him. Chuuya has too much to live for, has a quivering heart that keeps surviving, and Dazai has nothing. Heâs too human for Dazai.
âI donât owe someone my loyalty just because theyâre in charge. The same way I didnât want to be a leader when I was out in the slums, but someone had to do it,â Chuuya mutters, lowering his gaze to their hands. Thereâs a flicker of defeat in his eyes, and what fire he had in him has died out. âMy loyaltyâs with the mafia. That hasnât changed.â
âYou could shoot, and our secret would die with me.â Itâs the closest he gets to begging Chuuya to kill him. His mind screams to be put out of its miserable limbo. He didnât want this, and he still doesnât want it. The scarf around his shoulders is a river of bloodâa heavy reminder of the decisions heâs had to make to get this far, at the cost of everyone around him. And once caught in the spiderweb of leadership, thereâs little else to do but succumb to it.
A dry laugh leaves Chuuya and he tosses the gun aside. It clatters to the floor and disappears into a dark corner. He takes a deep breath and lifts his gaze to meet Dazaiâs in defiance. Refusing to give up. âI get it now. What you said two years ago about needing me and the Port Mafia to protect this world was all talk, just so you could get to this point. Whatever was left of the Dazai I knew before you became boss is gone. Dead. Like he wanted to be. Thereâs no point in killing you where you stand when you already did it to yourself from the inside out. Boss.â
â just do what youâre told. like you always do. â
this is over 1.5k words oops... but ANYWAY, ABRAM. look at the monster you created. you've unleashed this ungodly fox!chuuya hybrid experiment thing
cw: blood, injuries
As the window rolled down, he clamped a hand over Chuuyaâs mouth.
âI told you to quit it, Chuuya,â Dazai said lowly, turning his attention to a man standing just outside on the sidewalk by their car, eyes obscured by a pair of shades. âNow shut up, or theyâll hear you.â
That warning wouldnât stop Chuuya. Dazai knew so. So long as they were stuck in the backseat of a Port Mafia vehicle, Chuuya struggling against Dazaiâs grip and kicking and gnashing his teeth against the hand on his mouth, they had everything to lose and nothing was in their favor.
Not to mention that he was in enemy territory. He shouldnât be here. The warning alarms blared in his mind the moment he hauled Chuuya over his shoulder and set his limp form down inside before getting in himself. The driver had shot him and the mafiaâs unconscious executive a curious look that flickered between concerned and knowing. He looked ready to speak, and Dazai cut him off with a âGo. Now,â before any questions left his mouth.
That got people killed. And he wasnât in the mood after the frankly stupid shit Chuuya had gotten himself into. This wasnât Chuuyaâs fault, but it didnât stop him from clenching his jaw with silent pressure. He knew who to point the finger at. Six years ago Chuuya had some of the best days of his life and some of the worst ones within weeks. He had it all, and had it all taken away.
Chuuya would never escape his past as an experiment, it seemed. Sometimes Dazai harbored the belief that the world should burn for what its people have suffered through. N dying once when they were younger wasnât enough. That was a mercy the man didnât deserve.
The arm he had around Chuuyaâs middle tightened. A crushing hug against him. He heard a wheeze against his palm, as if the air had left Chuuyaâs lungs for a moment, and he stilled for a few seconds.
âGreetings, sir,â the man in black greeted with a nod, bowing at the hip. He remained at a distance, unmoving, but Dazai felt the eyes behind those sunglasses on him, studying him. âTerribly sorry to have to stop you, but this checkpoint leading down to Yokohama Port had recently been put up due to increased surveillance on behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs.â
Dazai heard a muffled sound against his hand and tried to block it out. It sounded like panic. That was the last thing he needed, let alone Chuuya. âRight, so Iâve heard,â Dazai answered coolly, leaning back against the car door, blocking the sight of Chuuyaâs beaten, bloodied figure. He flashed a strained smile, and the man did not react. âYou donât sound very sorry at all, but youâre just doing your job, even if it means that youâre wasting my time. Now, what is it?â
âThereâs been an incident on the outskirts of the city involving special ability poachers.â Fishing around inside his jacket, the man pulled out a badge with a photo and name attached, the surface of it glinting under the sunâs harsh rays. Detective. Dazaiâs eyes fell upon the title, ignoring the manâs supposed name. His blood ran coldâhe knew that a subdivision of the Ministry of Home Affairs was the Special Division for Unusual Powers. The government as a whole was not to be trusted between the Hunting Dogs and unethical research projects that birthed something unholy like Chuuya.
From the corner of his eyes, orange-red ears twitched and flattened. A fluffed tail thrashed between them, against Dazaiâs leg, the anger palpable. Chuuya was losing his patience. He also wouldnât be alive right nowâor worseâhad Dazai not found him when he did. Chuuyaâs suit was torn along the arms and legs, blood oozing from wounds that smelled strong and caustic like chemicals.
The bastards knew to poison him.
âCanât say I heard anything about it. Or do you think I have something to do with it? My hands are clean if youâd like to see them.â
âIâm simply conducting a routine inspection of all vehicles that pass through this checkpoint.â Putting his badge away, the man stepped forward, and Dazai narrowed his eyes. In other words, he has no reason to be suspicious unless Dazai gives him a reason to be. âThere are devices similar to bear traps being used by a group to subdue and capture ability users, but theyâre only targeting a specific subset of ability usersâhybrids. You wouldnât happen to know anything about this, would you, sir?â
He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his palm. Teeth sinking in and drawing blood. Dazai stiffened and suppressed the pained hiss caught in his throat, jamming his hand harder against Chuuyaâs mouth, tiny fangs grazing his skin and over the wound.
âSounds like a bedtime story to scare kids with so they donât go disobeying their parents,â Dazai said with an amused lilt. âThe governmentâs got its hands full bothering the wrong people about this when they should be focusing their efforts on going after the people responsible. I think youâre sticking your nose in the wrong place.â
He didnât have a gun on him, but he knew where Chuuyaâs knife was. If it came to thatâŚ
Continuing to stare, the man eventually got the hint and backed away. After a pause, he cleared his throat and waved for the car to continue on its way. Once clear, the window rolled up, and Dazai slowly let go, observing the pinprick marks of pointed teeth in his palm and the blood trickling from its source. He let out a sigh and shot Chuuya a sideways glance, whose eyes were wild and darting around, but he remained motionless long after Dazai loosened his hold. The tail that smacked Dazaiâs leg went still.
Wounds coiled around Chuuyaâs arms and legs like tendrils, reminding him of the corruption marks.
"Really, Chuuya, if you want to act like a dog, I can treat you like one. I thought you used to hate that."
âI didnât need to be saved, asshole, I couldâve gotten myself out of the trap, and they wouldâve been dead for what they did. Theyââ
âEnough,â Dazai interrupted. The ears atop Chuuyaâs head twitched again. Despite how difficult he was beingâalways stubborn to the very endâDazai smiled. Even if it killed him, Chuuya would fight until he drew his last breath. He admired that about Chuuya, throwing all sense of self-preservation out even when at his most vulnerable. âJust do what youâre told. Like you always do. I see the poison didnât weaken you as much as I thought it did. You were out for a while, but I thought you wouldâve been out longer.â
Chuuya jolted upright from where he sat between Dazaiâs legs and glanced behind him with a withering look. âWas that you touching my head while I was out? I knew I felt something, but I thought I was imagining it.â
Donât touch my ears. The warning was clear, and Dazai ignored it. The circumstances werenât the best, but Chuuya, with his head in Dazaiâs lap and having his ears pet, was Dazaiâs nervous habit of needing to feel that someone was still alive. Every time Chuuyaâs fox-like ears moved to the strokes of his hand, it reassured him.
He had never been soâŚworried? Was that the right word? He felt sixteen all over again, watching the city turn to ruin before his eyes and being helpless to do anything about it.
âRest. Thatâs all you can do right now, anyway. Youâre injured and the poisonâs already coursed through your system, but we canât have anyone seeing you look like this until you can control your transformation again.â Heâll figure something out like he always does. He has to. For Chuuyaâs sake.
Dazai admired Chuuyaâs bravado, but it was also profoundly stupid of him. Chuuya wanted revenge before dying if it had come to that, but that wouldâve been the kindest scenario. He couldâve woken up in a lab all over again with a worse fate than death.
That was what worried Dazai. Chuuya worked so damn hard for his freedom. Dazai knew this and wouldnât let it be taken from him again.
They settled in a silence not-quite-comfortable but was them and Chuuya leaned back against Dazai, mumbling something that didnât quite reach his ears. The energy soon left Chuuya, and he went slack.
âHowâd you even know where to find me, huh? Unless you had a hand in this whole thing too.â
âWe were partners for a reason,â Dazai said with a cheeky grin. He looked ahead at the opposite window in front of them, watching the city speed by in a blur. His face quickly fell. âIâve got an intuition for having a feeling when somethingâs terribly wrong.â He felt Chuuyaâs tail flick against the back of his hand in something like a caress. âSomething that wouldâve made you wish that you were dead.â
from the non-human prompt list. preference for kitsunezai as always but anything that inspires you is great! take your time đ
hi Laugan!! I know I saw your prompt inspired me to write Lost Little Lamb, but I wanted to give you something else in addition to taht because this prompt had my brain running in circles with ideas tbh
have 1440 words of kitsune!Dazai/human Chuuya and hooking up gone wrong, but it's too late and Chuuya's in too deep
The thing in the attic stirs and grows restless.
Itâs been two weeks since Chuuya began hearing sounds up there. Two months since he began hooking up with Dazai after they met on a dating app. And itâs been two days since he got a good nightâs sleep.
Whatever it is, it sounds alive and beastly, making scratching sounds against the floor and walls like an oversized rat that made his home its own home. Things havenât been the same since he had met Dazaiâan odd, if charming man who didnât know how to flirt or hold a proper conversation if it hit him upside the head, but his strange mannerisms and terrible jokes were enough to get Chuuya into bed.
He sits on the edge of his bed scrolling through their conversation, dozens and dozens of messages going back days and up to a week ago.
I canât come over today, sudden business meeting got me, oops! â 7:36 pm
I just now saw your message, napped for longer than I expected. How about tomorrow? â 2:46 am
I have to do a bunch of cleaning, I donât think you wanna come over and see how messy it is. Socks lying around isnât very sexy â 9:10 pm
Chuuya scrolled through excuses after excuses from the last few days. Dazai had complimented his place, his choice of decor, and his bed, and it felt like he knew everything about Chuuya while Chuuya knew just the clothes that Dazai wore on his back and what he did for work. Thunder rumbles in the distance, and he listens to the sound of rain hitting the window. It fills him with a deep sense of want tonight, to be close to someone, and the most recent message from Dazai was that he could not come over tonight. He was out.
Out doing what?
The weatherâs terrible, and when Chuuya looks up, he sees faraway cars down below with their fog lights piercing through the night. A chill runs up his spine, and he tosses his phone aside. Itâs so quiet he can hear himself think, can hear the wind picking up outside, can hear the floorboards upstairs creaking if he listens hard enough.
A deep sigh leaves him and he gets up to stretch. Heâs resigned himself to another restless night of little-to-no sleep. This is how he and Dazai metâtwo lonely souls who bonded over insomnia and the itchy, compelling need to get up and do something. Meeting in the dead of night was convenient for both of their schedules, but he does not understand what Dazai would be doing at this time and in this weather, if not coming over.
The weather sucks ass tonight. Whatâre you doing out? Getting drunk? â 10:29 pm
Itâs his fault for never responding to Dazaiâs last message, but he knew not to expect anything from yet another excuse. Did he even want a part of their little thing anymore? Did he not have the guts to tell Chuuya to his face that he wanted to break it off? This leaves a bad taste in his mouth, and he clicks his tongue in annoyance. Being bad at conversation also meant that Dazai was incapable of being straightforward. Every word had a double meaning. His every response was carefully curated like he was playing a game of chess that Chuuya wanted no part of, and it made things frustrating.
Yes, they were just hooking up and fooling around once in a while to blow off steam, but Chuuya didnât like the feeling of being wanted just for his body and otherwise given the cold shoulder.
He leaves to wash his face and splashes cold water to jolt himself awake. In the mirror, he sees some of his hair sticking up from rolling around in bed and smooths it out. His eyes are red and heavy and want to close and try to sleep again, but he does not want to. He canât.
The last two days itâs felt like someoneâs been watching him.
Maybe itâs the lack of sleep catching up to him, he rationalizes. He had to retype his message to Dazai twice because he kept making typos, and his eyes are watering from the harsh bathroom lights. After splashing more water on his face, he quickly looks up again. His heart quickens in his chest and he sees nothing reflected in the mirror except for himself, his trembling fingers, his widening eyes.
A thud upstairs startles him.
If the cold water didnât wake him up, that did. Thereâs something up there, thereâs no way heâs imagining it. Not after hearing it so many times. Then he hears the violent vibration of his phone on the nightstand in his room, and it surprises him that Dazai answered so fast.
Out hunting â 10:35 pm
Just as he finishes reading the text, he hears someone or something coming down the stairs. Slow, measured footsteps like those of another person, despite him living alone.
The thing in the attic is coming. Chuuyaâs instinct is to hide or get out of the house, but the front door is just past the staircase. He grabs the knife he kept under his pillow and tiptoes out into the hallway, his hand shaking and his heart thudding in his chest. He wants to scream, and itâs difficult to suppress the primordial urge to do so. His body does not care. Itâs suddenly silent, and he hears the blood rushing in his ears, blocks out the rain striking the roof.
Chuuya struggles to adjust to the darkness and he considers flicking the light on, but he swears he sees a shadowy blob of a person at the end of the hallway standing there, eyes on him, and he freezes, nearly dropping the knife as his breath catches in his throat. In an instant, a hand grabs his wrist, and the knife clatters to the floor. He feels something sharp, like claws, circling his skin, scratching the surface.
âLet me go, youââ Chuuya shouts, but a finger comes upon his lips and shushes him. He sees motion right in front of him, but doesnât know what or who heâs looking at. He just sees piercing yellow eyes, slitted like a snakeâs, staring at him.
âShhh, itâs just me, Chuuya,â a familiar voice says.
Dazai. Itâs Dazai.
âWhat areââ
Heâs unable to finish his sentence as a hand clamps over his mouth.
âWhat am I doing here? Iâm here to see you, of course. You asked what I was out doing, and itâs to see you.â
His eyes dart around trying to absorb any detail he could make out in the darkness. Thereâs only what he can feel and smell. Something soft brushes against his bare legâlike an animalâs fur, and he smells the dust from the attic. And blood. He fumbles to his right for a light switch, and Dazai grabs his wrist again, gently lowering it.
âI wouldnât turn the light on if I were you, Chuuya. Iâm afraid I donât look my best right now.â
The hand over his mouth lifts, and he swallows hard, trying to find his voice. âWhat do you mean you came here to see me? Thatâs not what your text said.â
âHuh? Sure it did. I said I was out to see you.â
Out huntingâout to see Chuuyaâout hunting Chuuya.
When he pieces together the true meaning, itâs too late. Dazaiâs always been strange, a little off, but something about him still drew Chuuya to him in a way he could not explain. He still wants to turn the light on, even as Dazai and his own brain discourage him from doing so. He wants to know what heâs looking at, what Dazai is, if not human, but he canât bring himself to as an arm snakes around his waist and heâs pulled against Dazaiâs chest. He feels warm and alive, but goosebumps cover Chuuyaâs skin, and he shudders. The hand on the small of his back is unyielding, digging into his thin shirt, and he feels claws once again.
A kiss lands on his cheek, and for a moment it feels like the Dazai he knew and knows was kissing him, but he's rooted in place and feebly follows along to being brought back to his room when Dazai asks,
"What should we do tonight? You look like you need to let a little loose, and lucky you, I have the day off tomorrow. We can spend the night together. Just the two of us. It's been a while."
