honestly, it would basically be bmb HAHAHA like i don’t see chuuya as a sub or even a switch tbh but he very clearly respects dazai even if he doesn’t particularly like him all the time.

ultimately i agree with you on all accounts; dazai is, at his core, an extremely selfish person, and he is more than willing to do what he must to secure the best outcome for himself/what HE wants, irregardless of who he has to hurt or step on to do it. i don’t think that that makes his feelings any less genuine—like you, i think he truly does care for chuuya and has a sincere soft spot for him—i just think it’s more a case of his selfishness outweighs pretty much anything else. like sure, he’s fond of chuuya, but that doesn’t mean he’ll keep him around if he becomes a threat—that fondness isn’t strong enough to counteract his selfishness. if chuuya begins causing problems or threatening whatever it is dazai wants, he’s gone in an instant, personal feelings set aside for whatever dazai’s ultimate goal is.

if you start siding with chuuya too often, he’s gone. if you start to favour chuuya instead of dazai, he’s gone. if you start disobeying and listening to chuuya’s demands and orders over dazai’s, he’s gone. if chuuya starts to push back too hard, and dazai decides it’s too much work to keep him around and keep reigning him in and stomping him down back into some unstable state of ‘submission’, he’s gone.

however, i think chuuya knows dazai really well—perhaps even better than dazai believes he does (although dazai is so fucking perceptive i’m not sure this would even be possible ahaha)—and he’d know which buttons to press and when to keep himself ultimately safe and a part of the relationship, irregardless of the fact that dazai knows just how to get under his skin and chuuya is quick to anger/react. if chuuya really loves you, and he knows his only chance at being in your life and having any part of you at all means he has to share with dazai, means he has to play dazai’s game, then he’ll grit his teeth and fucking do it. for you, and only for you.

i think that as long as chuuya is willing to submit to dazai in some way and allow him to have and own that ‘leader’ or boss title, the relationship works fairly well. i don’t think chuuya necessarily has an issue with authority or being given orders, but i do think he pushes back and challenges things he doesn’t agree with, so that’s where most of their fights or clashes would stem from (aside from the obvious of dazai provoking him simply to get a reaction + entertain himself). it would mostly be concerning matters surrounding you—dazai thinks one thing is best for you, chuuya disagrees and pushes back as hard as he can while still keeping that delicate power balance and enabling himself to stay a part of this relationship. dazai isn’t exactly a tyrant though; not when it comes to chuuya, anyway. he values his opinion and he’ll hear him and his opposing argument out before he makes a final decision. there will be times where chuuya will have to swallow his pride and let dazai do what he wants even if he doesn’t agree with it, and there will be moments where dazai’s impeccable manipulation gets to chuuya and he’s tricked into believing dazai’s in the right and it was him in the wrong all along. ultimately, though, chuuya has enough of a sense of self preservation to know when to back the fuck down.
