Racing on the Edge: Kai Hockley and Anna Weiss (are awesome)
The Spirit of Yachting: Creating Pathways for Women to Excel
She's the only womanâand best athleteâon her team's boat.
But before Anna [Weiss] can reunite with her parents, she graciously spends 45 minutes just outside the lounge with a reporter. While some athletes understandably dread a postgame interview, Anna is happy to chat. She knows her words can have an impactâor maybe the smiley, soft-mannered sailor is just a really good sport. âItâs so cool to do stuff like this, to share more of my message and talk about some of my vulnerabilities,â she says.Â
Her message is simple: âI want to show girls that you can be strong andbeautiful, and there is space for you in professional sports,â she says. âThereâs space for you in sailing.âÂ
Just the week before, Anna spent time on the water with 15 middle school-age girls, teaching them to sail with RISE, a national organization that uses the power of sports to address racial discrimination and champion social justice. In true middle-schooler fashion, the girls needed some coaxing to get on the water, but by the end of their session they were sold, says Alta De Leon, the head of partnerships and hospitality for the U.S. SailGP teamâand everyone wanted a selfie with Anna. As the first woman in her position in SailGPâs history, the Olympian is breaking barriers and building an impressive rĂŠsumĂŠ. But these moments are where Anna shines.

OneTwo-on-One with Mike Buckley and Anna Weis
Anna Weis is part of the United States SailGP team who she regularly competes with as the sportâs first (and only) full-time female grinder.
âPeople are always waiting for women to fail. But then, do they expect us to get back up and try again? Iâm not sure.â Weis believes the key to supporting female athletes is giving women the space to make mistakes, learn from them, and grow. âMen mess up, and theyâre given another shot, but when a woman does, itâs like, âOh, we knew she wasnât good enough.â Changing that narrative is essential.â
