Letter addressed to Josua Winter and his daughter Elsa, September 1942
My dear Josua, my darling Elsa,
It has been too long since my last letter, for which I beg your forgiveness. I can assure you, my thoughts are with you two every day. The photograph I keep in my wallet is from before I left Paris, so I would love a new one if you can manage it. I am sure two years have changed you two, especially Elsa, and I wish for my mental picture of my family to remain somewhat accurate.
The war is, as I have stated before, quite different as seen from Moscow, I cannot imagine what you have to endure each day, and it pains me greatly that I cannot get you out of there. How I long to see the both of you again! Imagining the day we reunite is the one thing giving me comfort, as I dread the coming winter and the remaining horrors the war might bring.
