Found in freshwater wetlands in much of central and southern Africa and in parts of Iraq and Iran, these cormorant-like birds swim with their bodies almost entirely underwater. They primarily eat fish, along with some reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, diving into the water and spearing prey with their bills, then bringing it to the surface, throwing it into the air, and swallowing it. Breeding in colonies with other waterbirds, they build their nests from sticks, reeds, and other materials, in trees, reeds, or other vegetation over water. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks.
