This place was a joke. Or a dream, Tommy deducted. Nowhere could be this safe, yet here laid Haven. A beacon of hope in a dark world. And it was fake. It offered him his twin brother back, his friends, even his mother and grandfather. Yet, he still pondered the question, did he want to remain here? He supposed he should have to. To stay near Billy, Teddy and Cassie. Wanda too. Erik, maybe. All he needed was David.
He didnât really enjoy staying here, despite the fact that Tommy knew he had to. The place was too open, too expanded, too vulnerable. He presumed it was just anxiety from previous times, but he never could tell. Not knowing the answers to any of his thoughts left him angry. A hot-head at heart. It was noticeable too, as the boy stomped around the grounds with nothing to do. Having been assigned as a supply runner, and someone who moved things around the camp, he didnât have anything to do until someone made him do something. Fuck that.
Hoping no-one noticed him in the act, he phased through a corner of the wall surrounding Haven and ran into the nearby woods for some peace and quiet. To do something. To make himself seem useful to himself.
She had intended to return to Haven with a number of rabbits from the snares, perhaps a deer if she came across one. Â She hadnât expected this. Â She had caught the scent of lanolin on the air and followed it through the woods to a small flock of sheep, engorged looking from two years without the aid of shears. Â She imagined that their number had once been much larger, and that they had escaped some paddock a while ago. Â They had been hoping to find some sheep.
Now it was just a question of how to get them back to camp. Â She probably could have carried two, but there were eight and she didnât want to chase the other six across the woods over three return trips. Â She would have a hell of a time herding them about as well, being just one person. Â She should have taken Gabby with her.
Then she caught the scent of someone else on the air, he had on clean clothes that smelled of the soap Haven had been using this week. Â She didnât recognise the scent though, beyond traces, people he had been in contact with. Â She waited for him to emerge through the trees.
