Only Angel
2.3k words on a polaroid, magic, and pandemonium. Harry Styles x ofc. Warnings: teeny bit of bad language, alcohol, barest mention of cheating
Harry pulled out his wallet to pay, but something else fell out - A picture. A Polaroid. An angel. Arabella. Woah. āSir?ā Harry blinked. Looked up. āEr - right, sorry.ā He paid up. Left the store. Arabella. Christ. Almost forgot about that. She didnāt leave a number⦠For f*ckās sake - why the hell didnāt she leave a bloody number? Harry sighed. Glanced across the street. Looked like he was going back to the bar, didnāt it?
**********
Harry was⦠exhausted.Ā
Just⦠tired.Ā
And the bar was crowded, and it was loud, and there were so many people.Ā
He stared at the whiskey in his glass, swirling it around⦠and around⦠and aroundā¦Ā
āHi!āĀ
Wow. Perky. Too perky.Ā
Harry didnāt turn around. The whiskey was so⦠mesmerizingā¦Ā
āHullo,ā Harry murmured.Ā
āIām drunk!āĀ
Harry blinked, glancing around despite himself.Ā
Bloody hell.Ā
Red hair. Red hair, in a high ponytail. Blue eyes, freckles. Freckles, freckles, freckles. She was grinning, blinding him. Pinkest lips heād ever seen. She was chewing bubble gum. She rolled it between her teeth. Bright pink. A white shirt, a little pocket over her heart. A little mini-skirt.Ā
She looked like a bloody angel.Ā
She was glowing.Ā
What the fuck.Ā
āUm - er -ā Harry cleared his throat. āHello,ā he repeated.Ā
āHi!ā she said again. āCan we take a picture?āĀ
āA - a what?āĀ
āA picture!ā she chirped, holding up a polaroid camera.Ā
āI -ā He hesitated.Ā
Sheās drunk, sheās gorgeous, heās drunk, he loves her, why not -Ā
Why not?Ā
āSure,ā he said.Ā
She grinned. Harryās heart stopped.Ā
She leaned in, Harry smelled cherry chapstick, bubble gum, liquor -Ā
āSmile!āĀ
A flash.Ā
Harry blinked, and she giggled. Tapped his nose. Harry blinked again.Ā
What the fuck.Ā
It printed. Whiirrrrrrā¦Ā
She took out a marker, spun it around her knuckles - she was left-handed, wearing a little ring on her middle finger, red nail polish - and murmured, āAr⦠a⦠bell⦠a,ā as she signed her name with a flourish at the bottom of a polaroid.Ā
A polaroid of him, a startled smile on his face, his gaze on her, who was beaming at the camera, her eyes bright and sparkling in the flash of the camera, dazzlingly brilliant in the dim darkness of the bar around them.Ā
āArabella,ā she said, blinding Harry with another dazzling grin and holding out the picture. Harry blinked. Nodded. āEr - Harry,ā he said. āHarry!ā she giggled, kissing him on the cheek.Ā
āNice to meet you!ā she chirped, and spun around, and -Ā
And she was gone.Ā
What.Ā
The.Ā
Fuck.Ā
***
Harry wanted a sweet.Ā
Something sugary⦠and soft⦠and bad for youā¦Ā
He found a bakery. Sprinkles. Lovely.Ā
Not even a queue!
Harry grinned. Got a cupcake. Pulled out his wallet to payā¦Ā
Something else fell out -Ā
A picture.Ā
A polaroid.Ā
An angel.Ā
Arabella.Ā
Woah.Ā
āSir?āĀ
Harry blinked. Looked up. āEr - right, sorry.ā He paid up. Left the store.Ā
Arabella. Christ. Almost forgot about that.Ā
She didnāt leave a numberā¦Ā
For fuckās sake - why the hell didnāt she leave a bloody number?Ā
Harry sighed. Glanced across the street.Ā
Looked like he was going back to the bar, didnāt it?Ā
***
Too early.Ā
He was too early.Ā
Only nine oāclock.Ā
Harry sat near the door. Ordered a whiskey. Swirled it around. Stared at the clock.Ā
***
Eleven.Ā
A gust of wind.Ā
Cherries. Bubble gum.Ā
Harry looked up. Grinned.Ā
An angel.Ā
āHarry!ā she exclaimed.Ā
āArabella,ā Harry said.
They were staring.Ā
There had been music, hadnāt there? In the bar? And people?Ā
There wasnāt any of that now.Ā
It was just her. Just him, just her, those eyes.Ā
āOh, for fuckās sake,ā Harry laughed, and he stood up, took a step, and -Ā
Her lips were soft, perfect, tasted like cherries. And tequila - hadnāt she just arrived at the bar? - and bubble gum. She was so sweet. She was giggling, her fingers slipping up through his hair, her hips swinging with the music.Ā
āGet a room!ā somebody shouted.Ā
Harry grinned. Forced himself to pull away.Ā
āShall we?ā he asked. āGet a room?āĀ
She giggled. āWe shall,ā she said, and they went and got a room.Ā
***
It was heaven.Ā
Of course. Only fitting for an angel.Ā
It wasnāt enough. Harry got the feeling it would never be enough.Ā
He got her number.Ā
Left.
Lasted two weeks.Ā
āHullo, Bellaā¦āĀ
***
She had a wonderful little flat.Ā
Bright and airy despite the cheap rent and creaky building.Ā
Harry loved it.Ā
She hated it.Ā
Something about being inside.Ā
But the hallway was fine.Ā
She liked the hallway.Ā
Something about all those lives, coming together, little interactions.Ā
They ended up in a lot of little corners.Ā
In the hallway.Ā
***
Next time, he lasted a week.Ā
Barely.Ā
The next, a few days.Ā
Barely.Ā
He was getting addicted.Ā
It was okay.Ā
He didnāt mind.Ā
Wasnāt anything he could do about it anyway, was there?
She was like something caught in his teeth, always there, nagging and nagging until -Ā
Until he called.Ā
āHullo, Bells,ā he began every call.Ā
āMeet me in the hallway?ā he ended every call.Ā
***
Six times. Six times was heaven.Ā
Seventh time, she stood him up.Ā
Harry knocked.Ā
He hated the door.Ā
Loved the flat, hated the door.Ā
All wooden, with little splinters everywhere.Ā
Nobody answered.Ā
He hadnāt expected anything; she answered on the third knock.Ā
Answered the door on the third knock, the phone on the third ring.Ā
Harry knocked again.Ā
Nothing.Ā
A third time.Ā Ā
Harryās hand was already on the doorknob.Ā
Nothing.Ā
Harry frowned. Jiggled the knob. It was locked.Ā
He knocked again.Ā
Knocked, and knocked, and knocked.Ā
And then -
Harry hissed in pain.
A splinter.Ā
āFor fuckās -āĀ
He sighed. Stared at the door.Ā
And then he walked away. Where was she?Ā
***
Iām sorry, sheād said. Iām so sorry.Ā
Heād smiled. Itās okay, heād said. I donāt mind.Ā
It wasnāt okay. He did mind.Ā
But then she kissed him.Ā
And he didnāt mind anymore.Ā
***
Harry knocked on the door to Arabellaās flat, only using one knuckle.Ā
He hated that door.Ā
Knocked again.Ā
Waited a beat.Ā
He raised his fist to knock again -Ā
The door swung open.Ā
Harry blinked in surprise; that was only two knocks, wasnāt it?Ā
It was a man. Tall. Red hair, blue eyes. Lots of freckles. Glasses.Ā Ā
āWhoāre you?ā Glasses asked.Ā
āHarry,ā Harry said. āAnd you are?āĀ
The man frowned. āHarry Styles?āĀ
āYeah, pleasure,ā Harry answered, a bit impatient. āWhoāre you?āĀ
Glasses raised an eyebrow. āLooking for Arabella, are you?āĀ
āFor fuckās - Who are you?ā
He grinned. āIāll take that as a yes,ā he said. āIām the brother. Oliver.āĀ
Harry faltered. āOh,ā he said, feeling like a fool. āRight. Is Bells - is she here? Arabella?āĀ
āYeah,ā Glasses - Oliver - said, smirking. āIn the loo. Iām heading outā¦ā He stepped back to let Harry in, and Harry nodded as he walked past him. āRight,ā Harry said, turning back around to face him. āWell,ā he said awkwardly, ānice to meet you.āĀ
āRight, right,ā Oliver said absently, staring at Harry.Ā
Harry cleared his throat. āErā¦āĀ
āCan I justā¦ā He hesitated. āLet me just warn you -ā he began, and Harry smiled a bit.Ā
āThe brother warning?ā he cut in. āBreak her heart and youāll kill me? I got it.āĀ
Oliver chuckled and shook his head. āNo,ā he said. āNo, no, I was going to sayā¦ā He grinned. āI was going to say be careful, mate. Sheāll be fine. Itās you I worry about. Donāt let her break your heart, yeah?āĀ
Harry frowned. āEr⦠yeah.āĀ
Oliver studied him for another awkward second. āRight,ā he said. āWell. Cheers.āĀ
He grabbed his coat, and he left the flat.Ā
āCheers,ā Harry murmured, staring at the door.Ā
āHarry!āĀ
āBells!ā Harry exclaimed, spinning around.Ā
āHello,ā Arabella giggled, kissing him.Ā
āHello,ā Harry said.Ā
āMissed you,ā Arabella breathed against his lips.Ā
āMissed you too, Bells,ā Harry sighed. āMissed you too.āĀ
***
She met him at a little coffee shop.Ā
She didnāt warn him.Ā
Well, not really.Ā
Just called. Asked where he was.Ā
āSee ya,ā sheād said.Ā
And then sheād appeared.Ā
Like a bloody miracle.Ā
And then sheād dragged him outside.
āLetās get some fresh air,ā sheād said.Ā
And so they walked.Ā
Well, he walked.Ā
She skipped. Ran. Jumped. Twirled.Ā
Sang. She had Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys stuck in her head.Ā
Of course she did.Ā
Harry grinned and held her hand as she spun into his arms.Ā
***
Harry was drunk.Ā
Pissed.Ā
Absolutely off his face.Ā
He was having the time of his bloody goddamn life, singing, dancing⦠drinkingā¦Ā
And then he saw something.Ā
Red hair. A shimmer. A magic.Ā
An angel?
She turned. Blue eyes, freckles, bubblegum.Ā Ā
An angel.Ā
His angel.Ā
Making out with somebody.Ā
Harry choked on his whiskey. Slapped a fifty on the counter.Ā
And left.Ā
***
Arabella called him.Ā
Harry didnāt answer.
***
She called him again.Ā
Harry picked up.Ā
āMeet me in the hallway?ā she asked.Ā
No, Harryās brain told him. Say no, it said. Break it off. Donāt -Ā
āAbsolutely,ā Harry said.
***
She kissed him before he could say anything.Ā
She kissed him senseless.Ā
Because she was beautiful.Ā
Because she was perfect.Ā
Because she was an angel.Ā
And, well, if she was a devil in between the sheets - his sheets, that other guyās sheetsā¦Ā
There wasnāt anything she could do about it, was there?Ā
***
She arrived at his flat two days later.Ā
She knocked three times.Ā
When Harry opened the door, she was grinning.Ā
She produced a box of chocolates. āDo you like chocolate?ā she asked.Ā
Harry grinned back. āI love chocolate.ā He stepped back. āCome in, then.ā She walked inside, floating on rainbows, and bounced onto his couch. She held out the chocolates, and he took one, and she popped one into her mouth, grinning up at him.Ā
āHello,ā she giggled.Ā
āHi,ā Harry said, raising an eyebrow and stealing another chocolate.Ā
She stood up. Wrapped her arms around his neck, pulled him close.Ā
āYouāre cute,ā she said.Ā
āThank you, darling,ā Harry laughed. āNot too bad yourself.āĀ
āYouāre wonderful,ā Arabella hummed, and she kissed him, and everything melted away.Ā
***
She was glowing.Ā
Wearing his shirt.Ā
Her hair was soft, the dusk light through his window creating a halo around her head.Ā
A halo.Ā
Of course.Ā
Harry was lying in his bed, watching her mess around on his piano.Ā
āYou like to play?ā she asked.Ā
Harry nodded. āMhmm.āĀ Ā
āI used to⦠playā¦ā she said softly, dragging her fingers against the keys with a feather-light touch. Notes floated through the air like butterflies, so crisp and clear that Harry could practically see them in front of him.Ā
āWhyādā - his voice was raspy; he cleared his throat. āWhyād you stop?āĀ
Arabella shrugged. āGot boredā¦āĀ
C⦠D⦠A⦠C⦠D⦠Aā¦Ā
Harry frowned. Heād never heard that before. He liked that.Ā
He loved that.Ā
āWhatās that?ā he asked.Ā
She shrugged again. āDunno.āĀ
She played it again.Ā
C⦠D⦠A⦠C⦠D -Ā
She stopped as Harry wrapped his arms around her, bending down to pepper kisses down her neck. āHarry,ā she giggled, spinning around to kiss him properly. āChrist, youāre ridiculous,ā Harry laughed as she tugged him down onto the piano bench.Ā
āYou love me,ā she breathed.Ā
āImpossible not to, Bells,ā Harry murmured against her. āImpossible not to.āĀ
***
Pandemonium.Ā
Thatās how heād describe her.Ā
Perfect pandemonium.Ā
Angelic, perfect pandemonium.Ā
Arabella liked that word.Ā
āPandas,ā sheād said when he used that word to describe a party theyād gone to.
Harry had grinned. āPandas,ā heād agreed.Ā
Arabella had laughed, and sheād kissed him.Ā
āPandas,ā sheād giggled.Ā
***
She liked old films.Ā
The romantic kind.Ā
Her favorite was The Apartment.Ā
She called it The Flat.Ā
But she couldnāt just watch a movie; no, no, that was too boring.Ā
Instead, she multi tasked.Ā
She watched the movie, and made cookies.Ā
And threw popcorn into hats.Ā
And played card games.Ā
Today, she braided Harryās hair.Ā
āI wish Iād met you when it was long,ā she mused softly.Ā
āMe too,ā Harry sighed, watching Shirley MacLaine spout flu statistics in an elevator on the screen. āShoulda stayed in bed this morning,ā Arabella murmured as Shirley did. She lowered her voice and imitated Jack Lemmonās sick voice - āShoulda stayed in bed last night.āĀ
Harry grinned.Ā
Arabellaās voice rose a pitch again. āNineteen!āĀ
āWatch your feet,ā Harry cut in, slipping into falsetto as Shirley said, āWatch your step.āĀ
Arabella giggled, mussing his hair. āAnd watch your hands, Mr. Kirkby!ā
āI beg your pardon!ā Harry chorused with Jack.Ā
āOne of these days, Iām gonna close these doors on you andā¦ā She mimicked Shirleyās random motions on Harryās head, tugging just a bit too hard, and Harry yelped. āChrist, woman!ā he scoffed, ducking away. āYou watch your hands.āĀ
Arabella giggled, fussing with his hair again and kissing his head.Ā
The Apartment filled the room for a second.Ā
And then -Ā
āIām bored,ā Arabella declared.Ā
āClaustrophobic?ā Harry asked, standing up and stretching.Ā
āPhobic,ā Arabella echoed, making a face. āI hate that word.āĀ
āHateās a strong one, Bells.āĀ
She stuck her tongue out at him. āI do!ā she exclaimed resolutely. āIn fact,ā she added, Iāve got a phobia of it!ā Harry raised an eyebrow. āA phobia of the word phobic, hm?ā She giggled. Nodded. āYes, sir.āĀ
āYouāre ridiculous,ā Harry laughed, pressing a kiss to her temple.Ā
āHowās the hallway sound, Haz?ā she asked.Ā
āThe hallway sounds fantastic,ā Harry said, and she led him to the door.Ā
***
She was rock and roll, Harry decided one morning.Ā
Perfect pandemonium in rock and roll.Ā
A bit of piano, angelic choruses, and then rock and roll.Ā
Harry spun a pencil around his knuckles and began to write.Ā
It was all too easy.Ā
She was an angel.Ā
He really saw an angel.Ā
He practically finished the song in one morning.Ā
Only Angel, he called it.Ā
C⦠D⦠A, it began. C⦠D⦠Aā¦Ā
