Death of Stephen de Fulbourn, English Cleric and Administrator in Ireland
Stephen de Fulbourn, an English-born cleric who rose to prominence in Ireland during the late 13th century, died on July 3, 1288. He served as Bishop of Waterford and Lismore and also held the powerful office of Justiciar of Ireland, acting as one of the chief representatives of English royal authority in the region. His career reflected the close but often tense relationship between the English Crown and its Irish territories during the medieval period.
As both a churchman and political administrator, de Fulbourn was involved in governance, justice, and the consolidation of royal influence in Ireland. His tenure was marked by controversy and accusations of corruption, which were not uncommon among high officials of the period. Despite this, he remained a significant figure in Anglo-Irish administration, and his death in 1288 marked the end of a career deeply tied to the expansion of English authority in medieval Ireland.
