A bulging disc stretches the outer layer but keeps the inner part in place.
A herniated disc tears the outer layer, letting the inner part move out. That one difference can change how the nerve reacts, how the pain feels, and how it should be treated. But many clinicians treat both the same way — and that's often where progress stalls. Here's what each level may relate to: L1 → Groin, inner thigh & hip
L2 → Front of thigh & buttock
L3 → Front & inner knee
L4 → Inner lower leg, foot & big toe (watch for weakness in lifting the foot)
L5 → Outer calf, top of foot & big toe (watch for weakness in lifting the big toe) Same spine. Different patterns. When symptoms don't follow the usual pattern, it may be worth looking at the nervous system more closely.
