Selling Product or Personality?
If you’re anything like me at all, you graduated high school then immediately headed off to college. Expectations were set high from the beginning by your family, friends, and yourself. Not only are you set out to be a first-generation college graduate, you are to accomplish it within the standard four-year time frame upon graduating high school. You feel the daunting pressure to quickly claim a major in order to avoid falling behind the strict four-year degree guide. You must make this major decision that will affect the rest of your life… no pun intended. Thankfully, I already had a good idea of my personal interests which led me to declare myself a marketing major. Personal interests of mine include: medical and selling… put the two together and you get a medical device sales representative! (I wish all math equations were that easy). The more I explored the field, the more interested I became. I do however, have a lot more to learn and research in which I intend to share throughout this blog.
Like any young adult that is curious, yet uneducated about a topic of interest, they turn to the internet to search for some answers. It all started by simply typing “medical device sales representative job description” into Google. I found that the medical device industry is constantly growing, ensuring there will be plentiful jobs. I soon started to ponder the skills and qualities needed to become a medical device sales representative. For starters, a bachelor’s degree in business or health sciences is typically a base requirement. Sales experience is needed, preferably business to business. Leadership, commitment, time management, teamwork/cooperation, communication, problem-solving, etc. are all necessary skills desired to become a successful sales representative in the medical device field. Become aware of your anticipated job expectations and requirements in order to promote and brand yourself to your future employer(s).
The next step, how to go about promoting and branding yourself to land your dream job? If you’ve followed me this far, you should know I play softball (learn more at https://reyeslauren.tumblr.com/aboutme). Most of us play or have played a sport, instrument, have hobbies or job(s) where we have all acquired and practiced to a degree, several of the valued skills and qualities mentioned earlier. I have personally learned all of the skills listed above through many aspects of my life but certainly through the simple game of softball. I plan to treat my job search similar to my college athletic recruiting process:
Searching for desired universities to attend
Knowledgable of the available resources offered through the university
Aware of the teams’ history, atmosphere, overall bond
Similarly, I would like to attack my job search process by:
Searching for desired companies
Knowledgable of the job/company benefits
Aware of the company’s history, atmosphere, overall chemistry
I will ultimately analyze my options and pick the company in which I can visualize myself adding the most value to. I’ll then reach out to the company and show them everything I have to offer and why I believe, and they too will soon believe bringing me on board as their newest medical device sales representative is their next best move.
