And in other News That Interest Maybe Ten Other Guys And Me, Andy Lanning and Alan Cowsill are co-writing a miniseries called Revolutionary War for Marvel which will be a love letter to 90s Marvel UK material, while also explaining what ever happened to the secret cabal of evil technowizards called MYS-TECH who were pretty much every in those goddamn stories.
However, what really caught my eye was this:
Lanning: We are really dealing with the Paul Neary incarnation of MUK: Death's Head II, Dark Angel, Motor Mouth, Killpower, The Knights of Pendragon etc.
Mother. Fucking. Hell. YEAH!
The Indescribable Motormouth and Killpower was an odd series in that nearly everything in it that didn't involve its main star was boring as fuck. You'd think this wouldn't be that much of a problem, but nearly half of the whole run is taken over by Nick Fury dicking around with the Punisher and Cable and something called a "Badhand" shooting guns at MYS-TECH goons while making hardass comments. Also, the titular character takes about ten pages to finally appear, and when she does, our first glimpse of her is through a TV screen.
But when we finally meet her, her first words are "What the #&!%'s that?" and everything's suddenly alright with the world.
The pattern repeats itself through all 12 issues of her series, with the bits directly involving her and literal manchild Killpower (who looks like a 90s reject despite being created in the 90s) being whacked-out inter-dimensional adventures through city-wide shopping malls and artificial war zones and other such places that sound straight out of 2000AD, coupled with a few surprisingly clever character bits like Motormouth trying to explain to Killpower that killing isn't really OK, made oddly endearing by the fact that she can't stop swearing even as she tries to explain the sanctity of life to a 'roided-up cyborg super-soldier. It's like an odd theme that runs through the series about people not really knowing what they're doing or why, but also not caring too much and acting more on instinct and feelings than logic. Motormouth and Killpower have nothing to hide and present themselves as they are, which is probably why it's kinda interesting that the series' subplots mostly involved the aforementioned Nick Fury doing spy shit.
Or at least it would be, if said subplots weren't dreary as fuck.
Even Motormouth's powers were some seriously freewheeling stuff, with her sneakers first being a device created to open gateways into other dimensions, then having some sort of weirdo AI that calculated the perfect attack routines and movements, then Harley getting a cyborg implant that allows her to use her voice as a sonic weapon... It's like the Fury and MYS-TECH bits have a serious running plot with ramifications and twists and whatnot, while the Motormouth part is just an issue-of-the-month madlib between a couple of garage punk rockers throwing ideas at a wall. It's not perfect, and it could've been a lot better, but again it's oddly endearing and fun and a lot of it has to do with its main star.
Which is why I'm really happy for the chance to see Motormouth and Killpower back. Especially since the last time we saw them the former was in a hospital bed and the latter was a thrall of Dracula.
(Also, I was wrong: There is one bit of the Nick Fury subplot that's kind of amazing, which is when MYS-TECH summons a bunch of actual demons and send them to the offices of SHIELD to mess up their files and paperwork, burying Fury in enough bureaucratic red tape to stop his operations for months)
