So it turns out the chain of command for when the FBI head is fired is just a default, not a requirement. It also turns out that the next guy in line, Andy McCabe, is indirectly linked to Clinton. Now Jeff Sessions is going to determine the interim director--never mind that Sessions is also a subject of an investigation by the FBI!
Beyond any wrongdoing that may or may not have occurred, this speaks to a much deeper issue with Trump and co. They don't act to ensure continued public trust in government. Sometimes, it's through taking actions that can easily be seen as corrupt, whether or not the actual motives are corrupt, e.g. letting Sessions choose who will investigate him. Other times, it's through making accusations and not backing them up, like when Trump claimed voter fraud but never investigated to prove it. In a country where people choose their leaders, they need to believe those leaders will act fairly according to the rules, and if leaders act unfairly, those leaders need to be brought to task to ensure that the system works. Appearances matter, and repeatedly creating the appearance of unfairness on both sides of the political aisle can't be good for the country.
