The ultimate test for a documentary about cricket is if it works for someone who doesn't like cricket. And some leading reviewers have said it does. That’s interesting because I love cricket, and like this documentary.
The period this is talking about, 2009-13, is when I started to really love test cricket. It’s hands down the best form of the game. So naturally, being able to go - ‘I remember him!’ - to all the talking heads on screen has a certain pleasure in itself. And just seeing all the footage of old test matches, showing how great the game is and it being able in this context to drum up enthusiasm for the format is commendable. But, that’s all the cricket stuff. What about the film?
A great compliment would be that this gets across the importance of cricket today and historically, if not too briefly. The colonial roots - how England were challenged by colonies of the empire - are skimmed over but there, and I think that’s interesting to anyone. It also balances well the focus on the individual players as well as on the team as a whole. Like good fictional films, you get to know individual aspects and how those aspects affect the thing as a whole.
And it’s not propaganda. Mental health plays an important role in sport and in the documentary, and the film doesn't shy away from what was right and what was wrong. Although, sometimes it could be clearer in aspects relating to the environment this all existed in. That said, the voiceover does sometimes seem like some motivational speech or something, talking about the nature of time and whatnot. But it’s commendable that by the end that problem seems to dissipate, not least because the voice is of the estimable Toby Jones.
Any fan would like to think that cricket matters. After this, and the current Ashes series, I believe it does.
