Living Weapon Whumpee is a highly efficient killer. Obedient and emotionless to an almost uncanny degree. It makes sense that the team assumed they were anything but human.

Or, perhaps Handler lied to them, aware that the team (softer than most in the business) wouldn’t take kindly just yet to finding out how the organisation truly worked.

Because of this, nobody on the team particularly cares for Weapon. It’s an unthinking robot, nobody’ll mind if someone is slightly rude to it or if they let it take as many hits as necessary for the mission.

But then it bleeds.

Bleeds like a robot certainly shouldn’t, chokes on the scarlet like it needs oxygen to breathe. And that terrifies the entire team.

The weapon clearly influenced by Handler to obey anything mindlessly, the weapon they’ve been letting take blows like it can easily be replaced, the weapon they’ve been harshly ordering around, has been a thinking, feeling human this whole time.

Caretaker and the team are disgusted at Handler and at themselves for not realising it sooner. Their attitude towards the weapon changes, offering pain meds and comfort, and Whumpee can’t understand it at all. Weren’t they doing a good job? Didn’t the team see them as a good weapon anymore?

Or, the alternative:

Mechanical Whumpee is deceptively human. Maybe it’s in their program to appear as human as possible.

The team and Caretaker bond well with Whumpee, considering them a very close friend who they’re honoured to fight alongside.

But then Whumpee gets injured during a fight, or perhaps catches a virus, and the team are in shock because they were never a human in the first place.

Whumpee doesn’t understand why everyone is mad. They don’t understand why anyone feels anything, emotions are so unfamiliar to them that they can’t comprehend that the team sees them as less of a companion now that their mechanical innards are revealed.

Or, they know why. And that’s why they hid it. Maybe Whumpee was something human before this, before they’d been repaired and slowly replaced until nothing original remained. And they’d been nothing but ashamed of that.

system overheating, human caretakers snatching hands away because they literally burn to the touch

reverting to default ‘new user’ programs when their memory drive fails (forgetting caretaker’s face)

"I see. You turned the neural feedback off, hm?"

Whumper circled the defective Whumpee. Frayed wires sparked. Hot metal touched against human skin. Blood mixed with a heavier, darker liquid dripping from their ripped off parts. But Whumpee moved like the pain wasn't even there, slowly getting back up, only hindered by some mechanical failures and lagging signals.

"Smart choice," Whumper continued, leering at Caretaker. "Let's turn it back on again, though. Wouldn't want your friend to completely lose their human feelings."

A single press of a button and every bit of pain immediately slammed back into Whumpee. All at once. Every nerve activated. Every nerve end lit up with every form of pain; burning, stabbing, biting. And grating as their voice rasped through their throat.

Their entire body went haywire. Their own muscles couldn't keep them up, probably didn't even receive the correct signals, and they crashed to the floor.

Whumper stepped around the convulsing figure, casting a devious glance between Whumpee and the horrified Caretaker.

"And if you can turn it off and back on..." he started, his lips curling up. "I suppose you can also... increase the signal."

sapient humanlike android whumpee treated badly by the owner. pretty casual abuse, like slapping when they get something wrong, lending them out for back-breaking work, not allowing to sit on furniture, general victimisation.

But then, one day, whumper gets dumped by some potential love interest and they come home frustrated and aroused and take it out on whumpee. Whumpee doesn’t know what sex is and doesn’t particularly distinguish it from other kinds of abuse except maybe that it was more painful than usual

Then they escape whumper, find a team and all and then casually mention their rape once. And everyone gets weirdly quiet and uncomfortable even though upon learning about other kinds of abuse whumpee endured they usually swear revenge, get angry, something along those lines. Whumpee is dumbfounded - why such a different reaction? They go searching and find out about sex and rape. And now they fear that everyone thinks they are tainted and is disgusted by them. UGH i am so unwell

it got to the point where whumpee almost... they're embarrassed and ashamed but they almost look forward to telling their team about the things whumper did to them, by now. the way that the team reacts, their anger, their protectiveness, it makes whumpee feel... important. it makes them feel like the abuse they suffered mattered, like it was real. it makes them feel like a person.

somehow this was just different, though. they tell about what happened when whumper was frustrated and they wanted to take their frustration and their stress out on whumpee's body, but in a way that didn't involve beating. and they needed to hear it that day - the anger, the proof that it meant something, that it mattered.

and their team stares at them. they look a range of sad and shocked and horrified and sickened. and whumpee feels like they did something wrong.

so they do research, like they do whenever people react in ways that they don't understand. and the shame creeps over them. it's deep and awful. their team, who has been so angry at their mistreatment, who have treated them like a person, protected and promised to protect and comforted and valued them like a person, have to have this in their heads about whumpee now. it's... it's awful. they would take it all back if they could.

they weren’t efficient enough, they didn’t do the job quite right. they needed assistance. whumpee only noticed it while working. something wasn’t right. they never worked like that.

“what did you do to me?”

“a small upgrade.”

“you didn’t tell me you were going to install an upgrade.”

“but it’s a good one, isn’t it? now that you don’t get distracted, you get the job done faster.”

“i… i liked watching the birds outside.”
