Vampire Caretaker was unsure what gave it away. A slight pallor, shaky hands, perhaps that vacant look on their face. Or maybe it was that faint scent. They knew how Whumpee’s blood smelled, they’d feel it every single day. And that day something was off.

“Whumpee?”

“Uh, yeah, y-yeah, I’m fine. Just… a bit tired.”

Were they? Caretaker took a deeper breath. No, something really was off. It wasn’t that sweet, gentle scent they fell in love with.

They didn’t manage to say a word before Whumpee headed out, leaning on the table awkwardly as they got up.

“Sorry, I have that… thing I have to finish. I’ll be right back.”

Caretaker watched them go. Couldn’t believe a word, but Whumpee wouldn’t lie. Perhaps they were mistaken. Perhaps something was wrong with them-

Thud.

if they wanted the meeting to go smoothly, they had to cooperate. they gave everything they had, unloaded. and still weren’t allowed inside.

“all weapons.”

they weren’t efficient enough, they didn’t do the job quite right. they needed assistance. whumpee only noticed it while working. something wasn’t right. they never worked like that.

“what did you do to me?”

“a small upgrade.”

“you didn’t tell me you were going to install an upgrade.”

“but it’s a good one, isn’t it? now that you don’t get distracted, you get the job done faster.”

“i… i liked watching the birds outside.”

are they a whumpee? trapped somewhere deep down and long forgotten. nobody cares to feed them. every time whumper walks by, they launch forward, snapping, hissing, trying so hard to reach them and take a bite but restraints keep them in place. perhaps if they behaved, whumper would’ve fed them

are they a caretaker? they have to help whumpee, and to do so they need to keep their own weaknesses and desires under control. they can hold on for a few more days, right? wrong. next thing they know, whumpee’s hiding in the corner pleading to leave them be, and gaining their trust again isn’t going to be easy

“You wanna watch again?”

Whumpee nodded.

Again. Ever since Whumpee got there, they were watching Caretaker’s every step. They’d watch if anyone came with them through the door, where they moved, what they had in their hands. Every time they cooked, Whumpee had to be there.

Caretaker sighed but gave in.

“Fine, fine…”

The shadow shifted to the chair. As long as they didn’t get in the way, Caretaker could put up with it.

Just think about cooking.

It soothed. When they first saw Whumpee after weeks of captivity, they thought they could handle it. Whumpee needed a safe place, someone close, someone caring. They could definitely provide it. “See? No one’s here, just us. You’re alright, you’re safe, you’re not there anymore.” Now days’d gone by. Same words, same hugs. And still letting Whumpee follow them. Cooking soothed. All they needed after sleepless nights was to zone out and move on.

Caretaker stirred the soup and reached out for a box on the shelf above. Warmth and scents. Final touches.

“What’s that?”

Sudden noise made Caretaker startle, spilling more than they intended to add.

“It’s salt. Gosh, it’s just salt…”

Breathe in, breathe out. Keep your voice down. They just want to make sure. Breathe in, breathe out. Fine. Whumpee liked to add a bit more salt anyway.

it doesn’t want to hurt whumpee, or keep as a pet, or take as a sacrifice. it lived long enough to know pain and fear and suffering, and it wants whumpee to never feel hurt or scared, not anymore

• where are they? it’s cold, it’s lonely, and it’s definitely not where they were before

• who are those people? some faces look familiar but others… others are new, and those smirks and glances don’t look good

• hands on their shoulders and arms, holding them in place. “calm down, calm down! it’s okay, calm down!”

• whumpee can no longer fight, no longer scream, so they just give up trying, one thought in mind: no one will come

• quiet, silent breakdowns, when whumpee hides away, unable to accept their own pain, let alone admit it in front of the others

• the team watches the footage they got. no one dares say a word when it finishes. and especially not whumpee

• caretaker taking the first look inside whumpee’s mouth; “oh that’s not good…” escapes their lips no matter how hard they try to stay calm

• caretaker helping whumpee feed; blood in elegant glasses - or funky mugs to cheer whumpee up a bit

• bonus: vampire caretaker biting the prey for whumpee and letting them feed naturally. it’s warm, it’s fresh, it feels almost the same

they might have less experience than most of the team, they might hold a lower rank, they might be one of the youngest. and now they have to become the leader for those who are even less experienced, even younger, those who must be defended

“oh dear…” - when they first discover what really happened to whumpee, barely holding back tears

“it’s just me” - when whumpee jolts awake from another nightmare

“don’t look” - when they clean and bandage whumpee’s wounds, despite the look of it all making them sick

“h-hold on!” - when whumpee nearly passes out in their arms

“what- what happened?!”

“oh, i, uh, i got into an argument.”

“you’re bleeding!!”

“yeah, sorry about the mess.”

caretaker just sighs. they still can’t get used to whumpee coming home injured. ever since they lived that one time, they stopped caring about getting hit, but caretaker couldn’t stop worrying about them

caretaker notices it while waiting at a red light, gently brushes their knuckles over whumpee’s cheek, sighing in relief. at last, they rest

and let caretaker carry them home and tuck them into bed and kiss them goodnight

a small cut, nothing serious but it still stings and makes doing chores uncomfortable - so caretaker gets them a bandaid and seals it with a kiss

a slight cold, not rendering whumpee bedridden but weary (and whiny about it) - so caretaker tucks them into bed and lets them rest

a little sad, perhaps they’ve just had a bad day but they’d still use a comforting hug - so caretaker gives them one, a tight and loving one

next time they go to the mall with caretaker, they come back with the fluffiest, softest pyjamas they could find.
