Ryland Grace was a prototype (as it always starts out as) but he was made to be a scientist model who thinks way outside the box (Analysis of Water Based Assumptions)

Of course, the investors of CyberLife didn't like that idea. So, he was turned off and forgotten about. Left alone in a random warehouse for years before being found and bought by a private investor or something (that part I still haven't fully fleshed out)

Grace was cleaned up, given child care and tutoring programs, and was sent out on his way. He becomes a teacher at a middle school, and finds he is very happy working with children, even if that wasn't his original directive.

He still gets a doctorate, but he takes online classes at night and in secret, still publishes his thesis, still gets laughed out of the science community, but this time it's all online, so no one truly knows that Grace is an Android. He's Deviant, sure, but he never removed his LED, never felt a need for it, never actually had to serve under humans and heavy lines of strict code and programming.

Anyways, the sun starts dimming, Stratt scientifically abducts him For Science™, he becomes one of the most important people on the Hail Mary project, and helps decide important matters.

Stratt, in all her genius, decides that Androids are the most expendable reliable asset she could ever have. So what does she do? She finds Androids, Deviants, who have a drive to do good, to help in whatever way they can, despite... Everything

Main thing is, most of the story stays the same, it's just that Grace is an Android.
