The Sacred City of Caral-Supe, Peru
While the pyramids of Egypt were still a distant dream, a sophisticated civilization was already thriving on the arid coast of Peru. Meet Caral (or Caral-Supe), the oldest known city in the Americas, dating back ~5,000 years around (3500–1800 BCE). No signs of warfare or weapons. Just music (bone flutes have been found) and monumental architecture that influenced Andean culture for millennia. Caral reminds us that complex societies didn’t just emerge in the "Old World", the Americas had their own cradle of civilization with one of the six places on Earth where urban society independently arose.
