Millions of people’s social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, credit card details, and more have been compromised! The system Equifax has put together is a little unclear, depending on which message you get. You may get a message that says your data is unaffected. If that’s you then you’re good! 👌 If not you’ll get one that says to come back on a certain date to enroll in an identity theft and credit protection program, but this message doesn't outright state that your data was compromised or what info hackers might have accessed. IF YOU GET THAT MESSAGE, HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: One consumer credit expert recommends placing a fraud alert on your credit files with the credit bureaus. They are responsible for contacting the other two companies to ensure it is carried out across the board for your credit file. Still, the Federal Trade Commission recommends you CONFIRM with the company you speak with that they will do this. For longer protection, you would need to file a police report demonstrating that you were the victim of identity theft, which is probably not something that can be done at this stage for victims of this hacking. In the meantime, set up the initial fraud alert and then keep an eye out for more information from Equifax. Make sure you enroll in their identity theft and credit protection program on the date they gave you -- the message you get at first makes it seem like you’re enrolled, but you’re not yet!!!
