I was watching the FA cup semi final earlier ā the penalty shootout at the end. How it was so thrilling and nailbiting, the way penalties usually are. And it got me thinking about my own footballing youth and the one single penalty I ever took for a side.
When I say āfootballing youthā, thatās an overstatement. I played very briefly for a 3rd Division side in the Edinburgh youth region, for one season. We only won two games throughout my time there. Ha.
But yeah anyway: that single penalty I took. It wasnāt in an actual game. It was in training. Whereby somebody was fouled in the box, and the coach had to chose a candidate from the twenty or so boys who were there to go up and take it. And when he went āHarryā I felt I had to step up and be a man for this prime moment.
And even though it was on some scanty field in a provincial town outside of Edinburgh, with a bunch of boys and a few amateur middle aged men watching, it was the most nervy thing possible ā all of this pressure engrossed on a finalistic kick of the ball, me v the goalie.
So the ball was there on the spot. And I went up and kicked it: and it was this feeble poof of a kick, which sent the ball dribbling towards the goal, and this embarrassed silence enveloped the whole crowd, and nobody even laughed. And the goalkeeper went āOh,ā and watched it feebly mince towards him.
He put a foot out to trap the ball.
And he failed to trap it ā and it slipped under his legs and into the net. And then he swore quietly.
So I technically scored my first and only penalty. But the goalkeeper was shit as well. Haha. He was nervous as well and we both fluffed up our jobs at this monumental sporting moment in boyhood.
I suppose thatās what sport is like for most of us. We just arenāt good athletes. But, meh, so what? At least we tried. Itās often finer to have these amusing stories to tell; and other people have them as well. Which is why I often I appreciate ārealistā films where portrayals are kind of accurate and like everyday life, wherein we, as people, are flawed and unlucky and our dreams fail.
Aye. Thatās what I was remembering when I watched the soccer game earlier.
