OP Original Plumbing: The Best of Ten Years of Trans Male Culture (Call #: 306.768 Op1) Independently published from 2009 to 2019, #OriginalPlumbing grew from a Bay Area zine to a nationally acclaimed print quarterly dedicated to trans masculinity. For nearly ten years, the magazine was the premier resource focused on #FTM and #transmasculine experiences, celebrations, and imaginations, featuring writing on both playful and political topics like selfies, bathrooms, and safer sex; interviews with queer icons such as #JanetMock, #SilasHoward, and Ian Harvie; and visual art, photography, and short fiction. In celebration of the magazine's ten-year run, this essential collection compiles the best of all twenty issues. Selections are reprinted in full color, with an introduction by activist Tiq Milan and a new preface by the founding editors, Amos Mac, and Rocco Kayiatos

For 10 years and 20 issues, Original Plumbing (or OP) provided a platform that centered transmasculine individuals, putting them on the covers with themes like “Jock,” “Family,” “Read,” and “Fashion.” Alongside the co-creators, trans writers, including notable journalists and authors such as T. Cooper, Thomas Page McBee, and Diana Tourjee, contributed Q&As, essays, and other written works. This was the sort of work that had, up until then, been rarely published elsewhere, from points of view that were largely ignored.

Transgender Awareness Week is an annual commemoration from November 13 through November 17 to increase visibility for trans people that’s not predicated upon pain, loss, or death. For far too long trans stories have been limited to those told from a cisgender perspective. From slam poets to academics, these 16 trans creators are changing the way their stories are told. Let them lead the way.

In 2009, Amos, along with Rocco Kayiatos (pictured), launched Original Plumbing, a magazine for trans stories, as told by trans men. By broadening the representation of the community, Amos instills confidence in others. “I continue to be humbled by the kind words I hear from people who tell me they’ve seen a little bit of themselves in my work, and how it’s made them feel less alone, or encouraged to live authentically.”
