1) Ordered an upgrade to my stalwart little Galaxy tablet, so that I can use the new one for sketching on. This is big. I have never been at all good at visual art. I mean that even my lovely teacher in Adult Art Expressions! class smiled tightly and said, “Oh, it’s so ...genuine and so ...primitive” of my Glass Vase with Flowers. I have been able to do justice to calligraphy and biology sample sketches, which are satisfying because of their precision. But I do enjoy pencil and charcoal sketching when I dare.
Exhibit A: Nephew Naptime (2006).
It’s worth noting that my mother is the family artist, with her own studio and regulars and gallery shows. My sister, the architect, is now also selling her artwork and has had her work hung at the UN in Geneva. Several of my friends are also professional working artists. So I’m surrounded by all this talent, and I have a full case of good quality art supplies and paper that I barely use for fear of wasting them.
Hence the tablet. I want to spend more time doing simple line drawings as a way of thinking about transmitting seeing - I work in 3D more readily than 2D, and I’d like to be able to do more useful field forensic and/or archaeology sketches rather than carefully shaded, laborious 3D renderings. I can sit at the beach and write as usual, OR I can sketch Trees and Logs, if that’s all I feel like, and erase it without feeling like I’ve cheated innocent supplies out of their raison d'être by screwing up.
I think I will not tell any of the actual artists in my life, though - they will be very happy and want to jump in and help, which no.
2) Applied for a pile of TAships that were re-instated very quietly and without notice. I was very cheeky and applied even though the reposted date was two weeks ago. Hey, the application survey was left open, and you never know. If I get one, I may just quit my Student Services data job and be able to focus ONLY on forensics...

My goodness there were so many gems I could have pulled from this call, but why not share the words of wisdom Natalie gave us in parting. She said that she could tell from the group’s questions that the 400+ crowd was full of intelligent people, she advised that we “Stop being intelligent. Get dumb and write your asses off.” The writing practice is all about getting out of own way, letting the writing do the writing, and getting to know our own minds. Can’t get enough of the #writingdownthebones work. If you haven’t read any of Natalie Goldberg’s books yet, I can’t recommend the enough. #amlearning #amwriting #writersonwriting #gettingdumb #stopwritingalone https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb28ESorm2g/?utm_medium=tumblr
