Ambush - Violeure
This is a forever favourite song. I still cry openly when it comes on. I cut my teeth in community radio with a friend who shared this as an all-timer. I feel like i've written about this before, because our mutual appreciation for this song was strong, and when he took his own life, i had to stop listening for awhile. Listening today and i still think it's one of the best punk songs in existence. RIP Matt. You were loved.

This single is one touches on relationships and the things that some go through to get love. For some love is so blind that they miss the signs that are right in front of them. The sparks often come and go soâŚ

So this weekend I went along to a local Wargames event called Ambush! Itâs at a market town up in East Yorkshire called Driffield, and run by one of our local game stores, Mighty Lancer Games. I was part of a group of Yorkshire Renegades running a big 40k demo game, and I dragged out my Black Templars for the purpose of smashing some Orks!
I didnât take that many photos, because it took so long to do everything as we donât have Apocalypse rules yet. There was a lot of dice rolling and walking the length and breadth of a 12Ⲡx 6Ⲡtable!
Hereâs some from the 2 days though:
The entirety of my infantry was spread across these 4 tanks.
This Terminator Assault squad killed 12 boys in one round of combat, then died to a Nob Squad charge in the back.
Hordes of Orks vs some Imperial Finest Armour.
The Killer cans cometh!
OPEN FIRE!
The High Marshall and his retinue advance to slaughter the Xenos!
The biggest Ork Tank on the field was blocked in by this heroic Land Raider, until it was destroyed!
My zealous warriors advance.
Keep moving forward!
Thereâs was a good showing from the Orkâs finest airforce!
This is almost the entire board after setup on the first day, it got very bloody very fast.
My Landspeeders! Out for the first time sinceâŚ6th edition probably!
It was a really, really fun time, and the allied and enemy generals were a fantastic bunch. It did really make me want to try Apocalypse now that GW have made that ruleset so streamlined. Will have to see what itâs like when I have the rules in my hands.
I painted a few bits up to make up the numbers for this, so pictures of them will be forthcoming eventually. Right now I need to build a Sicaran Battletank!

Ambush! -- a solitaire alternative to the Squad Leader series with 8 scenarios set mostly in France, 1944, by Eric Lee Smith and John Butterfield (who also painted the cover art), Victory Games, 1983. Victory Games was a subsidiary of Avalon Hill formed mostly of ex-SPI staff.

The worst part of any plan was toâŚ
Not have a plan.
That was, not have a plan thoroughly considered. Possible scenarios did not have to be dissected down to their most miniscule components, but it would help to have some manner of exit strategy. Of which⌠he had none of currently.
Oh but that was just his style, wasnât it? To head straight into danger with only a flimsy understanding of what he was confronted with, only to be shown that his idea had been completely wrong from the outset and the danger was exponentially greater than originally anticipated. Then he was left with his pants down [hopefully metaphorical because they all had to break on occasion and take an innocent leak goddammit].
Okay. So what? That didnât mean the threat could go on being a threat. Someone needed to get off their ass and face it whether they understood what it was all about or not. Sometimes said party had to dive straight in in order to get the answers needed to come up with something better.
Sloppy as hell but effective he would say. Effectively stupid, but he played that part pretty damn well. He was an expert.
Harry briskly strolled through the city streets, mostly empty at that time of night. But it was Chicago, and nothing would be completely eradicated of the general populace. There was a whole array of people who embraced the night, both supernatural and human alike.Â
He felt a hell of an energy gathering at the point he swiftly approached. But there was no evidence of anything out of a place that he could see with his naked eye. His plan was to head to said spot and try to see if he could detect----
Oh shit. There was a little girl there.
Little girls were indicative of demons or something. Demons always took on the image of something unassuming, something people would trust without waver. Because no one in the world could be so angry to not love the sight of a little girl.
Unless they were truly cracked in the head or something.
Little girls could trap the most staunch of minds and twist their souls into knots.
Wait.
That wasnât a little girl.
That was....
Evelyn? She was short. Shortie McShortieton.
Shit.
Harry came up, wrapping an arm around her shoulders, pulling her into motion away from whatever sheâd been doing in the moment. It wasnât the smoothest encounter but he wasnât trying to be gentle with her. He shuffled her into motion because she was seemingly standing directly in the path of a hell of an energy field.
âHello.â
By itself, it could well be termed the lamest of the greetings. Delivered without real substance, meant as a phrase when passing casually by the side of a stranger, a mild acknowledgement of anotherâs existence rather than an opening for more substance. It was spoken as surely as a breath would wisp past parted lips, as the steps would normally carry one onward back on track to their original destination without real fear of being sidetracked with unwarranted conversation. It was not a greeting meant for reciprocation. Not really. Unless it were with a repeated phrase, a simple âhelloâ mimicking the first. Not mocking. Embracing.
Such simplistic greetings were delivered and then forgotten. There was rarely anything to reflect on the outside any sort of traitorous consideration that would betray what other thoughts might be circulating on the inside. And at any rate, who would know what those subtle context clues meant? If they were passing as perfect strangers.
âHow you doin,â Eve?â He liked calling her that. Eve. Because Eve was the first woman and she had a hell of a lot of mythology surrounding her in every walk of life. Eve was a woman who didnât care a damn lick what the man in her life thought. She could make decisions for herself thank you, she would eat that fucking apple with fervor.
âWalk with me. Talk with me.â
