This week's theme: Animals!
Much like children, animals who live in the brutal galaxy far, far away are often treated very badly. It’s rough out there! In these panels, Nomi Sunrider uses her Jedi powers to set two dragons against each other before they can hurt her little daughter. It was only in self-defense, and hopefully the monsters will be able to stop themselves before they seriously hurt each other. Still, as an animal-loving, vegetarian pacifist, I wish Star Wars featured more ecologically responsible narratives. Nomi -- who is one of my absolute favorite characters -- is an especially useful character to examine through an ecological lens, since later in the story she literally burns down an entire rainforest!
Check out this great article about how Star Wars defaults to treating animals cruelly, and how The Rise of Skywalker -- my least favorite movie -- actually subverts this trope!
