@ambitiouxblondeā sent:Ā Ā ā I donāt feel anything. ā (post-finale)
sheās trapped.Ā trapped in a new branch of this terrible nightmare that she thought sheād done so well to avoid,Ā with a careful eye kept on malcolm at all times.Ā ainsley hardly knows her father,Ā and jessica had sheltered her from him as much as she possibly couldĀ Ā (Ā Ā though suspicion bubbles,Ā a hint of dread that her daughterās been visiting martin for some time now lingering uncomfortably in her chestĀ Ā ).Ā Ā shouldnāt that have made her safe?Ā kept her protected fromĀ ---Ā from all this?Ā
typically thereās a masterful mask,Ā crafted and cultivated over twenty years placed so carefully atop the broken woman that lies beneath.Ā she canāt hide that now,Ā though.Ā how could she?Ā ainsleyāsĀ ---Ā ainsleyās murdered someone.Ā jessicaās....Ā she doesnāt even know what to refer to nicholas as,Ā in the past tense.Ā but heās dead,Ā and his blood stains the floor of the home sheās tried so hard to keep for herselfĀ Ā (Ā Ā she does her best to avoid dwelling on that particular aspect of the subject for now,Ā thoughĀ ).
sheās drained.Ā this last year alone has left her exhausted,Ā with one truly disastrous event always outdoing itās predecessor.Ā itās an exhaustion that might surpass,Ā even,Ā the terrible years thatād followed martinās initial arrest.Ā the whirlwind of chaos that accompanied her entire world crumbling around her while a requirement remained to raise her children.
to raise her childrenĀ ---Ā god,Ā thatād been her only truly crucial task,Ā hadnāt it?Ā to assure that theyād be safe,Ā and sane,Ā and far away from their fatherās reach.Ā far away,Ā safe,Ā and protected from becoming their father.Ā with malcolm itād always been harder,Ā ten years is enormously different from five in terms of time spent with someoneĀ Ā (Ā Ā and influence attained by that someoneĀ ---Ā Ā or so sheād thoughtĀ Ā ).Ā Ā itād seemed wrong to keep him from his father when martin had been the only person jessica had thought could reach him.Ā sheād thought that time and genuine exposure would turn her son off from everything his father was.Ā but her worry only grew as years passed.
and ainsley.Ā ainsleyās been so carefully protected.Ā offered whatever shelter her mother couldĀ Ā (Ā Ā perhaps forciblyĀ Ā )Ā Ā allow.Ā the chances of a five year old having been corrupted by murders that sheād been as in the dark about as the rest of the familyĀ Ā (Ā Ā save the perpetratorĀ Ā )Ā Ā had seemed so slim that all effort was placed on protection rather than damage control.Ā now all jessica can do is wonder what she couldāve done differently.Ā what signs sheād missed.Ā Ā
if sheād been able to catch on to the true cause of her husbandās erratic behavior in those last months,Ā how many could she have saved?Ā despite all of gilās attempts over the years to convince her that there was nothing she possibly couldāve done,Ā the question lingers.Ā festers.Ā breeds doubt and further burning questions that threaten to tear her apart.
the newest addition:Ā could she have saved her daughter from....Ā becoming this?
mask slowly reforms,Ā a shield from the turmoil that boils withinĀ ---Ā ice to counter the heat,Ā to keep it from rising.Ā itās rare jessica whitlyās left without some witty retort or biting comment,Ā but where her daughterās apparently left without feeling,Ā sheās left without words.Ā instead her back straightens,Ā head held high.Ā sheās supported only by the enormity of her pain.Ā itās the most constant company sheās kept over the last twenty years and,Ā despite all her wishing and attempts to drown it,Ā pain stubbornly remains.Ā sometimes it lessens.Ā there are occasionsĀ where things even feel like they once had.Ā those are rare,Ā though.Ā more often jessicaās left with such griefĀ ---Ā raw and tearingĀ ---Ā that she wonders how she makes it day to day.Ā Ā
raising her drink to her lips,Ā taking a long,Ā slow sip,Ā she finally finds her words.Ā her exhaustion colors every word,Ā weariness creepingĀ āround her like vinesĀ ---Ā treacherous and threateningĀ ---Ā a soft exhalation paired with the shaking of her head.Ā jessica canāt even make eye contact.
āwell,Ā maybe iāve finally succeeded in carrying them all for you,ā
and for the first time,Ā she can truly say that sheād never wish to relieve the burden and weight that emotions carry.Ā she wants ainsley to feel thisĀ ---Ā to regret thisĀ ---Ā to.... something.Ā anything.Ā anything that might prove that her daughter might be in any position where her mother might yet remedy this.Ā take it away,Ā somehow.Ā to salvage the perfection ainsley had managed to attainĀ Ā (Ā Ā even if that perfection had only been in jessicaās mindĀ ---Ā because she has to save something.....Ā something of her little girl before the image of such a gruesome murder becomes all she can associate with ainsleyĀ Ā Ā ).
and finally,Ā a cool,Ā biting,Ā Ā āyou can take them back now,ā
the haunting of hill houseĀ Ā |Ā Ā accepting!
