Alpine is a small car company founded in 1954 by racer Jean Redel from his own garage in the city of Dieppe, located on the northern coast of France. Produced sports and racing cars with a rear-mounted engine and lightweight plastic body. This concept turned out to be successful and has not changed over the 40 years of the brand's history. From the beginning, Alpine worked with Renault, using its mechanical components to build its vehicles, and in 1974 it became part of Renault. The most famous model, the Alpine A110, became famous for its rally victories in the early 70s.

The A110 has become the trademark of the Alpine brand all over the world.
"One hundred and tenth" was a further development of the A108 with a berlinette body (berlinette - a coupe with a smoothly sloping roof line). The A108 appeared as a prototype at the Tour de France in September 1960, and a few days later appeared before visitors to the Paris Motor Show as a 1961 model year.

Two years later, it was the Alpine A110's turn in Paris. The car received a memorable complete and harmonious appearance, which was the result of the collaboration between the venerable stylist Michelotti and the young graduate of the industrial design college Serge Zuliani.

Engines and some other components for the Alpine A110 were supplied by the Renault plant, which was subsequently reflected in the double “surname” of the cars produced. The number 110 in the model designation in this case has nothing to do with the numbering of Renault serial production.

The Alpine A110 used a power unit from a Renault 8 Series 800. It is a 956 cc engine developing from 51 to 55 hp. Depending on the modification, it was installed on cars with different bodies. Initially, in addition to the Berlinetta, it was a coupe and a convertible (they are, in fact, the A108 of the second series with new engines), as well as the new 2 + 2 GT4 A110 coupe. All "one hundred and tenths" were equipped with disc brakes (all wheels) from Renault 8 and a four-speed gearbox as standard. The model range of the company was gradually formed.

Over the years, the body has undergone minor changes, mainly related to the interior details. The most notable modification took place in 1967, when two more headlamps were added to the two headlights, installing them between the main ones just above the front bumper.

Outdated and not very popular cars gave way to modifications of the Alpine A110, differing from each other in engines, transmission options and additional equipment. So, for example, over the entire production period of the A110, the engine "grew" from 956 to 1647 cc, adding up to 140 hp in power.

The design of the chassis remained unchanged for a long time - only in 1974 the rear suspension, traditional for all Alpine, gave way to a suspension on the wishbones (model A310). The Alpine A110 is by far the most commercially and structurally successful car of the firm.
