Pierre Gasly Needs More Than Top Speed to Survive Baku
Baku tempts Formula 1 teams with one obvious idea: remove drag and chase speed down one of the longest full-throttle sections on the calendar.
For Pierre Gasly and Alpine, that solution is only useful if the car remains trustworthy everywhere else. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix combines huge straight-line speeds with heavy braking zones, rapid direction changes and walls that leave almost no margin when the balance suddenly disappears. Gasly therefore needs an Alpine that stays settled as the aerodynamic load changes, particularly when he commits to the faster sections and then asks the car to slow and rotate immediately afterwards. Too much rear instability can force him to lift or make corrections that destroy lap time. Too much downforce, meanwhile, can leave Alpine exposed on the straight.
Baku’s elevation changes and narrow Old City section add another layer, requiring a driver to be precise rather than simply aggressive. Gasly has spoken positively about the circuit in the past, but enjoying Baku and extracting everything from it are different challenges.
For Alpine, the goal is not to build the fastest car at one point of the lap. It is to give Gasly confidence everywhere that matters.
