Sherlock Newbie Fic a Day: Omegaverse Part 2; Polar Shift Hypothesis, by Alpha Tango
Just a reminder, the Sherlock Newbie Fic a Day project is being written for my edification a friend of mine who had never read Sherlock fic before I started harping on her endlessly. These daily reviews are my invitations to her into the world of Sherlock fan fiction. If anyone reading these has suggestions, by all means, please weigh in.
Yesterday, I vaguely and unsatisfactorily introduced the Omegaverse AU, letting the splendid mildredandbobbin do the heavy lifting of explication with one of her fics. The next rec is going to get into more of the societal implications of Omegaverse, but after serious reflection, I'd like to include a link to the first Omegaverse fic I ever read.
AO3: Polar Shift Hypothesis, by AlphaTango. Ten chapters, 36748 words. Unfinished. Rating: Explicit.
I came across this as it was being written, and it has since been abandoned. The last chapter of the fic is a letter explaining why it was left unfinished, and I get it, I do. I admire the author for being direct, and for not working with characters they didn't trust. It still makes me sad, though, because the WIP was really well written and engrossing. I think the anger and fear of the characters in this story felt real and completely justified, and I really wanted to see how this Sherlock and John worked it all out (if they did). I'm still including the fic, again after due consideration, mainly for the passion, anger and sorrow of Chapters 8 and 9. (Also, I have to call out the careful creation and maintenance of original characters here, which cannot be easy.)
