Filed under ‘answers to the question why I didn’t take the Foreign Service Officer (FSO) exams myself’. 😆 . When I was a journalist covering the Department of Foreign Affairs, I would often get told by senior diplomats that I should give the FSOE a go. Even our foreign minister at that time told me the same thing after I cornered him for a quick interview. It’s a great career and I did mull it over. But in the end, I know I love journalism more. In my 20s, I was also way too impatient, way too opinionated, and I can’t help but call out things I don’t agree with or when things are unfair. So it really is much better for our country that my mouthy self didn’t do it. . But life does love to make funny jokes on people and I ended up marrying one. In the last six years, while we were posted abroad, I had to learn to let things go, be less mouthy, be a bit more patient, and to express my disagreement without being disagreeable. It could be my husband’s traits rubbing off on me but I can always say I just matured as I neared my 30s. 😛 . Had the pleasure of staying at @sonyasgarden for a weekend after we got our negative Covid-19 and wrapped up our two-week isolation. It was such a lovely experience to get close to nature, fall asleep while listening to the sound of crickets, and get to know more about planting organic fruits and vegetables. . I ate (and enjoyed!) a lot of champorado ans salad during that weekend in Tagaytay. Meat-eater Carol can’t come to the phone right now. 😉 . Sonya’s Garden is a Bed and Breakfast located in Tagaytay — a two-hour drive from Manila. It’s on higher ground so its a bit cooler and a great place to run to when you’re tired of the city hustle. The bed & breakfast also houses a couple of restaurants and a picturesque dining space dubbed as the ‘Proposal Garden’. You get a free tour of the place when you stay overnight which you should really take advantage of. I learned so much about planting that day. . It’s a place to relax and truly unwind with no wifi in the cottages. Don’t expect TVs or radios too. We stayed in the Borage cottage that had a selection of books and had the dreamiest Filipino-inspired interiors. The first restaurant I visited in Manila after we were cleared to go out was @kaigreenbelt. The soft shell crab spider rolls were such a stand out. The Angus beef melts in your mouth while the tempura — gotta have a classic — came with a light crisp that complemented the freshness of the prawns. So good. . Enjoyed the desserts as well like these bananas lightly fried and topped with ice cream (like the upgraded, fancier version of the dessert called ‘turon’ we Filipinos grew up with). You also get an option to make your own smores. Really yummy and made me long for chillier weather. But if you’re a bit clumsy like me with the cooking, better get your companion to do the marshmallow roasting for you. Don’t burn yourself in the process. Just stick to taking photos and enjoying the food. 😉 . Kai is open for dine-in and they follow pandemic protocols. You are seated diagonally with acrylic dividers and your tableware comes packed.
