RIP Gonzalo "Cholly" Naranjo, who died Thursday at age 87. Naranjo, who played with the Pirates in 1956, pitched nine winters with Almendares in the #Cuban League. Cholly was among the former players I was fortunate to interview for my book, "Last Seasons in Havana."

RIP Tommy Lasorda. The Hall of Fame former #Dodgers manager was a popular player in the Cuban League in the 1950s. Here he is as a player for Almendares. “I have played in Cuba several winters and also played here last summer with Montreal,” he told The Sporting News in 1959. “I can guarantee that the American players have never been treated better in any town of the United States or Canada.” Lasorda was featured prominently in my book, “Last Seasons in Havana: The Castro Revolution and the End of Professional Baseball in Cuba.”
RIP Tony Taylor (shown here with Almendares of the Cuban League) who played with the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers during a 19-year major-league career. He died from complications of a stroke suffered in 2019. He was 84.
