12: Share a dumb line from an old WIP.

tragically i don't have anything really old, but this is from the beginning of my original Starts of Stories That Will Never Go Anywhere document, from 2011 or so:

“They’ve got Riddington.”

This was the sentence that was to precipitate the fall of governments and the burning of cities; it sparked heroic deeds and base acts. Admittedly, “they” had a good reason for taking Riddington; he, and I, and some others had been plotting for quite a while to take the Floating City.  But it is a fundamental belief of mine is that “they” were wrong, and we were right.

Stepan - he felt drawn to the Balakhnov Building which is what lead to him applying for the medical position when new doctors were being hired in.

The ladies are as follows:

Katrina Chase: A human college student. 20 years old. Lover of fashion, coffee, “basic” and doesn’t care what you think about it. She grew up in a small town called Wylant in Massachusetts, a place known for being Not So Great about Supernatural people. She tries to be open and accepting, but has definitely internalized some stuff. She’s roommates with Renee.

Aquameri: A water faerie diplomat. Somewhere in her 80s, but looks young. Incredibly intelligent and always seeking to expand her knowledge about things, but she’s also not afraid to cut loose and have fun. She lives in a thriving beach city in South Carolina, and regularly meets with the merfolk who live in the ocean there. Occasionally, she consults with the Supernatural Bureau of Investigations, of which her brother Teroren is an officer.

Renee Morand: A werewolf college student. 21 years old. The most mom friend of a person you’ll ever meet, although she is very selective about who she considers a friend (and therefore worth taking care of/protecting). She comes from a pack in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and while she loves her family dearly they tend to be very traditional and there’s some tension about her trying to forge her own path. She’s roommate with Katrina.

What they do is ... complicated to answer without spoiling anything ;) But basically supernatural goings-on seem to act strangely around them, and there’s a connection between the three of them that none of them really know how to explain.

whoa, i love this! idek anything about the rest of the WIP but this scene stands so well on its own and i already have a feel for the characters just from this short bit! awesome! (also haha great title)

Here are... uh, several lines (I couldn’t pick just one, sorry!), from Ocean: 

Our habit was lovingly ingrained, the pattern worn smooth: twice a week, Ana made her way from the university over to the firm, where she harassed her mother—one of the firm's partners (Vicente was never wrong, and nepotism was far from dead)—and then to my office to harass me. Ana and I had been friends before birth: I remember a photo of our mothers, laughing, bellies equally round. When her mother pursued law school and her father was in and out of the hospital, rapidly balding 20 years early, Ana stayed with us. When my mother died, I stayed with them. 

When it came to my father—well, chemotherapy couldn’t salvage the butcher-knife shaped hole in his gut.

This is fun and I’ve never done this tag before, so here goes the long list of my characters from Eosophobia...

Jackal: Jackals are wild dogs found through Northern Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia.  They’re pretty cool animals imo, but Jackal is really named after these because of their alternate meaning: a person, usually a jackass (ha-ha), who performs degrading or dishonest deeds.

Aardwolf: Aardwolf is Jackal’s brother, so I wanted their names to have relation.  Aardwolves (???) are small mammals resembling Hyenas found in Eastern and Southern Africa.  They eat insects and suck at fighting/fleeing, so when confronted they release a foul smell from their anal glands.  Aardwolf, the character, is a complete fucking asshole (I hate him tbh) so that seemed incredibly fitting. 

Viktor: Honestly his was pretty easy--the Russian spelling for victor, which I thought was fitting because of his ego/confidence. 

Nadege: A Slavic name meaning hope.  I pulled this one off a name generator tbh, and it fits her so well. 

Oswald: “Oswald” means “God” or “Ruler”, which is so fitting for Death.  And Oswald is such a non-intimidating name--especially for those of us who remember the children’s TV show (just google “Oswald octopus” tbh)
