Today I met Zaheda Bhorat, Head of Open Source Strategy at Amazon Web Services. She gave a fantastic keynote on The Next Big Wave here at #AllThingsOpen, but it was also an incredibly brave talk as she referenced her father who had passed away four weeks ago. I talked with her a bit about that, and yeah, there were tears and a few hugs. She really is amazing, and I look forward to reading her thoughts on #opensource. 1. Not willing to go Open Source? -- Thanks for asking but no thanks. It's just a precondition for working with 18F. 2. Citizens will actually contribute! -- And their contributions will be valid and valuable! This will create work... 3. Protect yourself with a Code of Conduct -- Some people don't like the government, but everyone should remain safe. 4. Invest in your content! -- Curate and create great, readable content around methodologies, process, software, and designs.

18F is a US federal government agency created in the wake of the HealthCare.gov fiasco to act as technical consultants to other government agencies. They communicate in the open via public Slack channels and publish both code and policies via GitHub.

Working in the open after the fact can be hard, like anything we try to retrofit. Instead of "cleaning up" your code so it's suitable or safe for open source, _start_ by working in the open! Whadda concept?!?
