I just wanted to share it with you all something that I remember about my past after meditating and doing a small cleansing ritual. I saw myself when I dressed up for a party as a “voodoo witch doctor”, just some costume in a bag type shit. I was old enough I should have known better. I felt kinda sick a little when that flashback came into my head.
I’ve been listening to Witch Bitch Amateur Hour’s podcast nonstop and they were talking about the Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau at a couple of points. She was very wise and powerful, that’s why she still lives on. I am a white person who has no right to play dress up in an already misunderstood practice. I deeply regret it and I kinda thought it was important to post a little something. I am educating myself and trying to grow in my own life, I know I make many mistakes and fall sometimes but I am trying to just allow myself to move on from my old self and get rid of any toxicity I’ve festered over my years past.
I just wanted to hopefully encourage other who’re people to do some research on hoodoo and voodoo, be careful not to be appropriating someone else’s heritage.
Also research any practice you’re going to get into to make sure you’re not doing things like “smudging” when you are not of that line, and keep your heart and mind open to listening when someone tells you you’re being disrespectful. There’s so many resources out there that can help you understand what’s right for you and what is something you can admire but respectfully not partake because it’s not yours.
