Now, for once, Kate doesn't have too much to relate to in this movie. She's never been addicted to anything or known anyone who was, she's never been suicidal or nearly this depressed, she's never had to deal with the guilt of someone's death, and she's never had to try to have a relationship with someone she blames for the death of a loved one. But Yelena? Oh, she checks all the boxes. She relates to Allison a lot more than she wants to admit, but seeing such a raw and unapologetic depiction of the struggles of addiction, depression, and starting over was really healing for her.

Yelena's problem was with alcohol, not pills, but she spent a lot of time being just like Allison. The only difference was that she didn't have anyone trying to help her. Nobody cared enough about her to pour her booze down the toilet, nobody noticed when she passed out in the bathroom, and nobody encouraged her to go to AA or get clean. That all changed when she met the Thunderbolts, of course, and I believe her journey to sobriety was a lot easier than Allison's was, thanks to them. But she remembers that feeling all too well; the scenes when Allison is high brought her right back to the nights when she'd drunk entire bottles of vodka instead of eating, and the lines "I'm not sure I have the will," and "Without them, I want to die. Every day," hit so close to home that Yelena stopped breathing for a second. And watching this movie with Kate now, after she's come out the other side of her own addiction and is doing so much better, she wanted to scream and beg Allison to stop every single time she took another pill.

And despite him being a fellow alcoholic, the reason Yelena relates to Daniel is his relationship with Allison. He knows she's struggling too, and he knows it's better for both of them if they can build a good relationship, but deep down, a part of him still blames her for the death of his daughter. And that's exactly how Yelena feels about Clint Barton. She understands now that he didn't kill Natasha, and she really wants to have a relationship with the man who meant so much to her sister and means so much to Kate. But a part of her will always blame him for not stopping her, for not dying instead, and for being the reason Natasha stayed in the States with the Avengers instead of saving her from the Red Room. She never expected to see such a complex relationship depicted in a movie, and she's so glad she got to see it. The scene where Daniel yells at Allison after saving Ryan made her sob, because he's right, he's not a bad person for feeling that way. And that means that Yelena isn't either.
