Azula was sent to earth as an exile. She was kicked out of her home world by Ozai and sent to a “less advanced” planet, basically Ozai told her that the only way she’d get any of her power back was to make it home because then he’d know she has what it takes. She’s captured and dumped into a containment room so people can try to figure out what she is and why she’s here.
Sokka is mostly in charge of looking over the meteor that she arrived in but one day they try to move her or something and she has a very bad reaction to Earth’s atmosphere. Sokka is the one who realizes what’s going on and saves her. It doesn’t earn him respect from the other scientists but it does from Azula. She starts to watch him as he works and only talk when he asks a question so Sokka becomes the person she communicates with.
She doesn’t tell him about her exile (at first) but does tell him she needs to go home. Sokka, wanting to help, helps her sneak out of her containment room and she disguises herself as a human to avoid anyone noticing her. As a human, she can operate on earth without issue. Cue, her and Sokka making a ship while Sokka shows her human life and Azula starts to fall in love with Sokka and Sokka starts to fall in love with Azula.
