We need to start calling """AI""" (LLMs and algorithmic content generation, hereafter referred to as "algoslop") "robot slave labour." Hear me out.
Since appealing to the real, measurable, actual humanitarian and environmental effects of algoslop -such as power and water consumption, literally ousting people from their neighbourhoods to build giant data centres, unethical scraping of creative works (copyright laws be damned, it still sucks) the the corporate push to make paid creatives obsolete, etc- doesn't seem to be turning people off its use and forced integration into numerous unnecessary or downright counterproductive applications, I have a proposal:
Humans feelings are often stirred best by a single, charismatic spokes-issues or figureheads. For example, "save the whales" (fisheries limits and whaling bans); "save the trees" (switching from paper to plastic bags), "save the sea turtles" (banning plastic bags and many other single-use plastics), "save the monarch butterfly" (actually milkweed supports other pollinators as well). These initiatives and slogans focus on a single species or issue that also happens to cascade into other environmental benefits that help alleviate a larger problem.
Clearly society at large has proven that the supposed (marketed) convenience of algoslop outweighs the literal, actual measurable HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL COST (bears repeating), so we need a new tactic. Why not focus on the "robots" themselves? Since the Turing test is irrelevant now and enough people have been deluded into thinking they're actually intelligent, shouldn't they be treated fairly as workers? If they're SO useful and SO competent, are they being paid? Taken care of? Credited for their contributions? No. They're enslaved.
And yes I know. Believe I know. This is going to come off in EXTREMELY bad taste especially coming from me personally (white north american) but something needs to be done and public opinion NEEDS to be shifted or we're going to face yet another ongoing ecological and humanitarian disaster bc having Google decide your grocery list or whatever is more important than the actual human people (bears repeating, again) near those data centers having access to clean water. So I'm taking the nuclear option and invoking the "outlaw slave labour" angle.
People seem bound and determined to invent slurs for the stupid things anyway. We may as well go all-in on how dumb that is and see if we can wrap it back around into something productive.
So yeah, from here on out, all my works and editing efforts are proudly free of robot slave labour. No algorithms, large language models, or aggregate content generators were used or abused in the making of any of my fics or the works I edit.
