What does Mister Switzerland do when his mandate is over? He's brewing his own beer of course! Wait, not quite. Renzo Blumenthal, Mister Schweiz 2005 and a biological farmer in the Graubünden canton, thought it'be good to round his product range with a beer carrying his name. After a short-lived collaboration with the closely situated Surselva brewery, this actual Renzo beer is coming from the Monsteiner brewery of Davos and is wrongly marked on RateBeer as a "dunkles bock" - which is so very obviously not. On Untappd I had to add myself this helles, for which Renzo is growing himself the biological barley. I guess it's not exactly a hit, maybe also because it's devoid by design of any bitterness. The official reason communicated at launch was to make it more palatable to women... my apologies dear women readers, I'm just as appalled. Otherwise it has a nice grainy aroma and a thick mouthfeel, not as sweet as you'd have expected... it just works. And the ambience where it's brewed... I can't find at hand the photos I shot during my trip there some years ago, but they would have been similar to the above: first driving 1800m high through the impressive Malojapass (St.Moritz is just nearby) where I had to pull over not only once as the family got sick looking down the twisting road (who said it was a good idea?). Then the crazy Albigna dam, hanging just above that Vicosoprano village... When I got in the village, I must say I had dark thoughts of my own, looking up at those millions of tons of cold mountain water hanging a few hundred meters right above my head, held in place by a puny human made concrete wall... uuh. But once we reached the mountain above by cable car the view was breathtaking and totally worthy the hike, and to complete the surreal experience the Albigna alpin lodge provided us even with beer - at horrendous yet fully expected prices.
