#Repost @skratchbastid ・・・ @postyourbeatz Broke out the SP-1200 last night to add an 80s touch to some soundtrack work that I'm doing. If you've watched the Netflix documentary "Hip Hop Evolution", then you've heard some of my beats on there. Some more work to be done for that. Ended up recreating "South Bronx" by Boogie Down Productions to get in the era. The SP-1200 has a limit of 10 secs of total sample time @ 12 bits (yes, 10 secs fit in that gigantic machine, in 4 2.5 second chunks) and it's original intended application was to give drum machines a more realistic sound by allowing users to sample their own percussion and program those sounds, instead of using stock synthesized drum sounds (SP = Sampling Percussion). I grabbed this one in 2004 for $900. I was inspired by one of my mentors, @buck65, #Jel & #DJSignify, who all made such great, textured beats with its gritty grain stretch sound (beats such as Buck's "The Centaur", which I used in my "Star Wars/Imperial Death March" juggle). You don't see much of that grit in this video, just some simple playing and programming, but check @therealeasymobee page for some legendary SP beats (such as Flava In Ya Ear!). Other producers who used the SP (who definitely inspired as well!) include Ced Gee (Ultra) @realpeterock @xplargepro @mainsourceband #PaulC @lordfinesseditc @djmuggs_the_black_goat_ (fucking JUMP AROUND was made using this thing, dumped a few times) @manniefresh @outkast #Madlib (Soundpieces is crazy) @djjazzyjeff ('Parents' disks still work) #JohnnyJ #FunkytownPros #OrganizedKonfusion and house producers like @djtoddterry #thomasbangalter and #AlanBraxe (check Alan's awesome SP demo for his track "Intro" on YouTube!) --- of course there are many, many more and this is not a definitive history by any means. Name some of your favourites below. Have a good Sunday, y'all! #SP1200 #EMuSP1200 #sampling #SouthBronx #BDP #hiphopproducer #houseproducer
