Ultramagnetic MC’s- Give The Drummer Some: Where do I begin?Ultra we’re and are the single most under rated and seminal rap group of all time, only Organized Konfusion sits in a similar place. Coincidently they both worked with the incredibly talented producer/Engineer Paul C. Critical Beatdown is just one of the most amazingly creative and banging golden era records ever made. Kool Keith was one of the first avant-garde rappers(Maybe the first was Rammellzee?) with his abstract lyrics and off beat on beat flow, he was 100 pct original, and Ced Gee and the crew had a bag of slap for that ass. I seriously studied that album and this song ad nauseam. When I first heard this record I couldn’t understand how Paul C got the drums naked from the Dee Felice There Was a Time joint (Later to be used by Cypress Hill for Insane in the Membrane and Chub Rock amongst others). Talk about chopping up samples man. The sonics on this song are just unreal, the layering futuristic and the rhymes light years ahead of its time. Sometimes artists are just too far ahead of the curve and go over all but the most informed and expansive of music fans. I like to believe this is Ultra Magnetics legacy. Too forward thinking for the masses, to futuristic if you will, still in NYC this and Funky, EaseBack and Ego Tripping pt 2 were all club bangers. They might have been the quintessential LQ artists. When there jams came on at the Quarters you might get your chain snatched or get punched in your mug just because. Critical Beatdown indeed. All praise due to Ultra and my friend the late great Paul McKasty aka Paul C who was taken from us way to early in life🙏🏼 #UltraMagnetic #PaulC #1212 -#LatinQuarters #SuperDiscoBreakin #LittleRecords (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEr9HaTAKNR/?igshid=m1bo8ys3w6g0
