pairing: michael robinavitch and baran al-hashimi (the pitt) with gender neutral, resident!reader.
0.7k / sfw. al-hashimi & robinavitch are (subtly) fighting over you. amused, you let them. + masterlist.
✦ before al-hashimi came, you were known as one of the quietest residents in the pitt. intelligent, quick-witted, and sharp. but quiet, curt, and all too eager to blend into the background. it’s no secret that robby has favorites, and yet, you weren’t one of them. no, you were something different. a mystery to be cracked, a puzzle to be solved. every shift, he’d set out to understand you. and every shift, you’d deny him the pleasure of doing so.
✦ robinavitch doesn’t know when to let go or give up, though, especially when it comes to his fascinations. he assumes it’s extreme shyness, this unwillingness to open up. everyone has a story to tell and you’re just too introverted to share yours yet. michael doesn’t have a clue that it’s purposeful. the dance the two of you do make shifts exciting. he asks a vaguely personal question, you skirt around it; he walks into a room and sometimes you stop speaking entirely, just to mess with him. there’s nothing more interesting than a desperate man, anyways.
✦ everything changes when al-hashimi comes in, however. she’s a natural leader, intelligent… sharp, though. like attracts like— it isn’t long before you’re on a case with her and robby watches from across the patient bed as you open up like a flower. talking. smiling. you’d never reacted much to praise from him, but from her? you’re blushing, batting your eyelashes almost, and that doesn’t sit right with him. not in his er, not when he’s been working so hard to know you for reasons he can’t even understand.
“you two know each other?” he asks, gesturing between you and baran.
“no, but hopefully over the course of this shift, we can change that,” al-hashimi replies smoothly, glancing at you before looking at him again. “this must be your favorite resident,” al-hashimi replies, “i can see why.”
not my favorite, michael thinks. aloud, though, he merely murmurs, “something like that.”
✦ jealousy doesn’t begin to describe it. wronged? betrayed? disgusted? the words that slip out of baran’s lips border on flirtatious, almost like how dr. garcia speaks to dr. santos. there’s no solid proof of anything, however. there’s just his feelings and his theories, which certainly don’t make for a solid case.
✦ so he tries harder. jokes a little more, then switches angles to a more serious mentor for you. then back to jokes when that doesn’t really work. what’s your angle? what about al-hashimi gets you going like that?
“i see you’ve taken a liking to dr. al-hashimi,” he remarks. beneath him is a sedated patient, and on the opposite side of the table is you. michael had told everyone else it was a two-man job.
“she’s… very inviting,” you muse, “easy to talk to.”
his brows furrow together, the words escaping his mouth before he can even try to stop them. “i’m not easy to talk to?”
your gaze flickers upwards, then back to the body in front of you. “i didn’t mean it that way, dr. robby. just that she’s easier.”
“easier,” he repeats. then, “easier. cracks you open in an hour while i’ve been trying to do it for months.”
“it’s nothing personal.”
his insecurity is doing the talking at this point as he pulls back from the patient, taking his gloves off and running a hand through his hair. “feels like it, though.”
✦ noticing robinavitch’s jealousy only emboldens baran, the two of them competing until suddenly they’re both subtly vying for your attention. they glare across the er floor at each other, one always manages to get on your cases, and you can barely tell if it’s baran or michael whenever you feel hands grasping your shoulders or hips to guide you.
“easy. don’t burn out,” al-hashimi murmurs as she passes you, patting your back. then, seconds later, robinavitch passes by as well, praising your work as he clasps your shoulder.
✦ things come to a boiling point when they both ask you to speak with them at the end of this shift. they frame it as an educational thing, but you know better— you tell them that the other has also asked to talk, and they both reply in the similarly: “i’d love for dr. robby to be present, actually” and “good call. i want dr. al-hashimi to hear this, too”
ok this is my like pitch post for al-hashimi x reader x robinavitch… they're highly competitive over you and you only make things worse by instigating. they both want you; in my mind theyre equally repressed about wanting one of their residents but are sooo eager to call the other gross for it.
