Two predators of the Akkrazaran succulent thickets, leggy moon jackals and spotted sabrecats. 'Jackal' packs lope over grasses that tickle their bellies, and weave through the narrow spineless places between patches of Euphorbia. The 'cats' will watch from the boughs of Acacias, or from within the shade of fan palms.

A plate illustrated by Dverga scientists with Akkrazaran labels, detailing a selection of species of corpse-feeding lizardbirds or tansuechgǎ. There are two known 'groupings' of these animals, with the blue-red examples belonging to one group, and the yellow-red to another. The former specializes on megafauna like mastodons or horses, while the latter are scavengers of smaller animals and the leavings of the former group.
They're valued in Akkrazare as the children of the god Pipme, and in some Tapakemo clans, are also part of open-air funerary rites in winter months, specifically the blue-headed corpsebird.

Ve himself is dressed up to be presentable, to mixed effect. He recently acquired enough tekenin (silver, weighted currency) to purchase finer quality cloth from southern Akkrazare, but doesn't have the eye for outfitting himself in a way that someone more accustomed to Having Things would. He might also be slightly colorblind but that's neither here nor there. The mismatched decorations– the tunic significantly more "northern" in style than the skirt– is piecemeal and tacky. But, to Ve, it beats his well-worn field gear, and he feels a little fancier for it.
Ok i really like making little dressup dolls of my OCs for reference purposes, and I got hit with "render everything" disease for this one so I'm sharing it lmao. I've posted Ve before (with his horsie...) but this is him down the road and tired and sick. Also just trying to figure out what people in the south of Akkrazare would wear, especially in the cooler, wetter seasons. Yay wool!!!

Nichetember 3: Secondary Consumer
I haven't really explored much of Akkrazaran material culture yet, outside of the stylistic drawings, so here! A basket used for foraging among the northern Tapakemo people. It's not watertight, just a nice, wide receptacle for vegetables. I don't have names quite yet for the species of sedge and casuarina relatives used for making the basket, that's what it would be made out of, plus the addition of tannin-based pigments.
ANYWAYS... here's a bird that might feed on the scale insects! Tezizi echgǎ, white-banner bird, is a bird found in Akkrazare's northern desert, and prefers nesting habitats in the southern shade, along canyons, or nearby sources of water, and the Tapakemo will sometimes follow their distinct white tails for relief from the heat. The birds forage out from these locations, gleaning insects from succulents and shrubs.

First day is for a producer/autotroph. Pozhituchnǎ (or dark-thorn) is a genus of similar plants whose ancestors grew in the highlands surrounding the rift lakes. These plants, due to shifting climates and changing geology in the rift valley, have since spread up into the semi-arid regions of northern Akkrazare, growing more succulent, spinier, and taller. Glands excrete calcium carbonate creating constellation patterns of spots that reflect sunlight. Akkrazaran mystics with an affinity towards Seed magics might use these spots to try and divine answers from Dzakha, goddess of Seed and beholden to the cycle.
Its flowers emerge late in the monsoonal season and continue flowering through until the hottest season. Early on in its cycle, flowers will open during the day, each one lasting roughly seven days, and the bright coloration attracting small, glossy bees. Eventually, as daytime highs become hotter, the new flowers will open after sunset, and a sweet scent becomes apparent to attract beetles. The two pollination mechanisms allow the plant to produce viable flowers for longer in the year. The fruit is a dry capsule.
Dark-thorn typically isn't eaten, though it may be cultivated for its decorative appeal and ease of care in the region.
