I.  MOTHER  -----  it’s  no  secret  that  the  relationship  between  victoria  &  allison  is  complicated  to  say  the  least.  the  mother  allison  knew,  the  side  of  her  that  she  was  allowed  to  see,  was  downright  ordinary.  intense,  but  ordinary  if  you  look  at  the  big  picture.  what  mother-daughter  relationship  isn’t  at  least  a  little  strained  ?  victoria  wasn’t  a  particularly  warm  person.  she  was  a  looming  presence,  strong  &  not  to  be  messed  with.  she  was  attentive,  caring  in  her  own  indirect  way,  simply  making  sure  her  daughter  had  everything  she  needed  in  terms  of  materials.  she  never  coddled  allison,  never  sugarcoated  life’s  bitter  pills  for  her.  moments  of  sadness  were  only  worth  consoling  for  a  short  time,  as  she’d  constantly  urge  the  young  girl  to  keep  her  head  up,  always  rationalize,  even  if  it  means  shoving  down  some  feelings.  &  if  grief  must  be  felt,  make  it  be  anger.  then  turn  it  into  fuel.   &  still,  as  emotionally  repressed  as  her  mother  was,  she  was  always  there,  always  watching,  always  protecting.  for  seventeen  years,  she  was  an  enigma.  victoria  didn’t  talk  about  her  side  of  the  family  &  the  only  thing  allison  ever  knew  is  that  she  had  no  living  relatives  in  that  respect.  no  glimpse  into  the  past.

it  took  seventeen  years  of  life  to  finally  learn  about  the  woman  with  misguided  values  that  truly  was  her  mother.  &  even  then,  it  was  long  after  she  was  already  gone.  it’s  the  strangest,  most  infuriating  thing  to  learn  that  so  much  hate  was  harbored  in  the  heart  of  the  woman  who  raised  you.  it’s  even  more  painful  to  process  that  this  is  exactly  what  brought  her  to  the  point  of  no  return,  a  knife  to  the  heart  more  bearable  than  a  life  lived  as  one  of  the  creatures  she  swore  to  kill  -------  she  loved  you.  it’s  the  hardest  thing  she  ever  had  to  do,  her  dad  would  say  &  her  heart  would  break  into  millions  of  pieces.  then  she  shouldn’t  have  done  it,  her  mind  would  echo,  grief  &  resentment  mingled  in  an  agonizing  dance.
