mass effect two just has this massive cloud of misery coating the entire thing. everything feels so much more hopeless. In the first game you get to pick your squad, screw what authority says! you know who you trust and you keep them close. but in this one, cerberus owns you. THEY make the calls. THEY choose who you get to take with you. Worse, they use your old friends as bait for enemies, and when you finally can talk to them, they want nothing to do with you bc you're working with the fucking boogeyman. And you don't even have a choice in that! You take every possible turn to rebel against this organization of Warcrimes Personified and the body they made of you protests. The skin cracks, the eyes bleed. "Think happy thoughts" the doctor says "that's what will fix it." Or, in other words, obedience. Go along, shepard. Be a good war dog. Turn a blind eye. If not, have fun looking like the monster that they want you to be.
