🦷 share some personal wisdom or a life hack you swear on

hmmmm... i was in a women of color group in college and we had someone sort of higher up in the university do an informal talk with our small group. she was aware that we faced a lot of challenges as woc and a phrase she used that i still use and think about to this day is "button up your light". it's this idea of protecting yourself and your goodness from people who have zero intention in understanding or listening to you. and i think the specific wording of that is so special and true. i think it's important to remember that regardless of who you are, you have this unique light that is worthy of nurturing and protecting, but there are people who won't see the light the same way you do. there are people who will take advantage of your light and there are those who have proven time and time again that they are inclined to destroy it.

as badly as we want to prove them wrong, sometimes it's perfectly okay to navigate a situation by buttoning up. not by hiding the light entirely, not by trying to change it. always let the light leak through. but really, some people deserve never being able to bask in the full light of who you are. that's entirely on them. and most importantly, that's not at all something to feel guilty about.
