NCIS Imagine: Being there for Gibbs During Hard Times
Requested by: Anon
Warning(s): Mentions of drugs, ODâing, some angst
Nothing
You didnât really know what to say to him. What could you say?
You know if you were in this situation, there would be nothing anyone could say to make this better.Â
Yet, you still had to say something. It's not like you could just say nothing. Because then youâd be an asshole.
You approach your boss from behind, quiet and still trying to find the right words.
âAt least the weather is nice,â you say softly. âYou always told me she liked the warm but not too warm weather.âÂ
He whirls around so suddenly, your brain barely had any time to register the movement. Gibbs is an inch from your face, full of anger.Â
âOh yeah, the weather is great. A great day to enjoy the sun while my mother is buried from an overdose of pills! Thanks, [Y/N] for the comment!âÂ
His voice is so sharp and belittling, that tears spring to your eyes instantly. Yet, even in this moment, you canât help but wonder how any suspect of Gibbsâs managed to keep their cool around him. Well, thatâs why heâs the best, isnât it?
âYouâre right...I..Iâm sorry.â Your voice comes out quiet, and way more childlike than you wanted it to be.
The anger that was once on his face seems to vanish, only to be replaced with a haunted tiredness youâve never seen on your bossâs face. You almost wish for the anger back.
âNo. Donât be. Iâm just...â he canât seem to find words, gesturing to the grave with his bouquet of flowers. âSheâs just...â
You nod and grab his free hand without thinking. To your surprise, he doesnât reject it and instead bows his head silently to the headstone.Â
You realize you were wholly wrong about silence being your enemy. And as Gibbs holds onto your hand as he lays the flowers on the fresh mound of dirt, you realize saying nothing gave Gibbs more comfort than words would ever give him.
